Think how much longer he lived in his shape than men ever before would have.

If he had been fit, he'd probably have lived another 20 years, but in all reckonings, 76 is still a long life, usually long enough for a working person to retire and yet enjoy a decade without toil, or to pursue hobbies, relish grandchildren, travel, or . . .

My mother died at age 71 after a lifetime of chain smoking. No cancer, but emphysema. Her mother died a month before her, 21 years her senior, a survivor of almost-fatal tuberculosis, and significant arthritis. But, in my reckoning, Mother lived a long life for a chain smoker. And Grandmother lived a long life for her generation.

I hope Wendt's family feels he did, too.
