And he was right, professionally speaking. Hollywood is still not kind to gay men for leading roles. They get far fewer blockbusters offered them.

And, Chamberlain was born in 1934, so when he came of age, homosexuality was still both a crime and classified as a mental illness. He shouldn't be villified for living long enough for the world to have slightly changed.

Here we are in 2025, and despite all the PC speeches and righteousness in cinema award shows, I can't name five leading men who are gay.

I can name three times that many who toyed with it in interviews and played the part to court gay viewers. That's a different story.

May Chamberlain rest in peace. He was a star in an era in which it was unforgivable to be out to the cinema-going public.
