...person assuming someone is gay and a hetero person assuming someone is hetero.

Seriously, folks.

We all know that gay people sometimes claim to be straight so unless they've been seen having hetero or homo sex, there's no proof, right?

In other words, if people want to claim that someone is gay and there's no proof otherwise, let 'em think what ever the hell they want.:D

Stange to actually write this,

but I have always been taught that when I assume something,

I might make an ASS out of U and ME.

The difference is a person and a hetero person? No?

So it wouldn't be safe for me to assume that you've never once assumed anything?

But I think you've missed my point.

Since most people are hetro, the normal pattern would be to assume everyone is hetro unless otherwise. Just like you should assume everyone is sane....bad example.

Gay, yes.
Ass, often.
Bottom, never,
except when raped.

Your question is perceptual.
Perceptions are seldom reality.
So assumptions are always risky business.

Unless given evidence to the contrary, I always assume it's none of my business. And it frequently turns out I'm right. ;)

There does seem to be a difference in the motivation, though... I mean, a lot of straight people will assume everyone else is straight unless you tell them otherwise, by word or action, simply because they assume everyone is pretty much "standard"... and straight is, let's face it, pretty standard. I usually guess people are straight unless they give me reasons to believe otherwise... because I'm not a gambler, I always bet with the short odds.

But gay people tend to only think that people they want to sleep with are probably really gay and just lying about it. Nobody cares if some old troll is gay or straight... being an old troll trumps both.

So true!

"OMG Wentworth Miller is totally gay! And I'd do him in a second!"

not:

"OMG don't you kinda wonder about Dan Rather?"

All of my false positives are hot.

Oh face it. We have all seen a really hot guy walk into a room and hoped he was gay and that he would be our next husband.

mhmmm! I was at a wedding this past weekend, and saw this really hot guy. I know he saw me checking him out, but I got no vibes. I'm still working on my gaydar. It needs much improvement.

Hmm...

But, aren't perceptions based, at least in part, on our experiences with reality in the past ? Perceptions are like stereotypes and cliches. Usually rooted in truth, occasionally wrong yet more often than not reliable.

Guess I'm straying from the topic.... ;)

Exactly, which is why I never believe a guy is str8 just because he has a gf or is married.

Been there, done that.

I'm not very good at picking out single gay guys from single str8 guys, but show me a guy in denial and I can pick him out in an instant.
