Keeping alcohol illegal to consume or purchase until somebody is 21 is ridiculous. It really doesn't seem to stop anybody between the age of 18 and 21 from drinking and just further perpetuates the taboo of drinking for those in that age group. Moreover, 21 is actually the highest minimum drinking age in the world. That we're out on the extreme of this would seem to indicate that it's excessively high if you ask me.

For those that don't know, there didn't used to be a uniform drinking age of 21. Many states and localities had lower age limits, in particular for wine and beer. During the 60s and 70s, there was pressure to drop the age further on all forms of alcohol. This was largely motivated by soldiers being drafted at 18 and not being able to drink or vote (the voting age was dropped around this time from 21 to 18 too). However, all that came to a final end in 1984 when Reagan signed a law which cut a state's federal highway funding by 10% if it didn't adopt at 21 year age limit. I believe Louisiana held out for a while, but eventually capitulated to get their share of federal funds. The law was pushed strongly by MADD (mothers against drunk driving) as a way of reducing alcohol related car accidents.

If you can vote and join the military at 18, you should be able to drink. It's a totally ridiculous contradiction.

Part of me would say yes. I think that if kids have the opportunity to drink at an earlier age it wouldnt seem so taboo and they wouldnt try to defy the law or try to act "cool", all the novelty would fade. also they could learn their own consumption limits, etc, etc. I would say only lower it to 20 or 19 at least, a lot of kids are still in high school at 18. I could not imagine how that would work out with alcohol in schools.

Also I would def say to raise the legal age for driving. For the drinkers I think that they should learn their limits before they are able to f up behind the wheel. But I dont know how this would work since many people are beginning to get jobs & go to college by this age.

I think the age to join the military should be raised. most people dont know what they want to do with their lives at 18 and are sent a lot of positive messages about how great the military is. they are too naive and insensitive toward the risks.

But back to drinking, I doubt it will ever change, anyone over 21 isnt going to give a damn. btw I turn 21 in a few weeks lol.

um... alcohol is already in every high school.

I don't get these posts, and I never do and I never will.

It's not hurting anyone that its at 21, it's really not. They shouldn't raise it no, but you are all saying yourself that everyones getting it, so you might at well lower it. Well if everyone's getting it, why not keep it there? With it being at 21 i'm sure your saving one life at least. If it was at 18 instead of 21 i'm willing to bet there would have been one additional life lost to alcohol related incedents. Keep it at 21 guys, take it from a minor for drinking himself, I've seen so much from my friends with drinking.

Minors get alcohol from their older siblings/friends as a majority. So that means someone 18, 19 will ask their older brother or sister who is 21 or over. Let them ask and get it, don't make it easier for that person to get it.

moderation is the key.

people can drink at any age.

from a few drops to a few glass and thats enough.

I also want to add that I'm 18 and I have such a hard time drinking. For my prom I had to ask my friends girlfriends dad and begged him for me to by a 6 pack of beer. That just goes to show that SOME people do actaully have a hard time and that the drinking age does actually work.

With it in effect, there will always be at least a few teenagers having a hard time getting alcohol. I'm one of them and i'm glad.

Edit: Oh, and if anything, if there's any switch with age related laws, it should be with your guns and booze.

A person can own a gun but a person not being able to drink is stupid, yes. Then again don't get me started on the gun problem.

If you are considered responsible enough to join the armed forces, cast your vote during an election and hold a licence to drive a motor vehicle I see no reason that you should not be old enough to buy and drink alcohol. This applies in Australia. Which makes me think that on the occasions U.S. military come to Australia who are under 21old must think it's a great place that they can buy alcohol and drink but are denied the same privilege in their own country but are expected to make the supreme sacrifice.

I don't want it lowered. Don't want a bunch of 18 year olds in my bar getting sloppy drunk. No thanks.

>>>Live in a Freshmen dorm for 3 years... You might change your mind.

The reason a Freshmen dorm is a haven for drinking is because that's the first time a lot of students can get away with it. Up until that point, they may have snuck a wine cooler behind the warehouses with their friends, but haven't been able to really "let go".

if you know the right people, you can get alcohol at any age... so I guess all lowering the age would accomplish is making it more convenient. I'd like it to be easier to get, but I'm sure for every teenager you can trust there must be several more you can't! although they're already drinking no doubt, so why bother keeping it at 21?

but ohiospeedo had the best reason not to in my opinion hahahaha.

what's drinking age anyway?
when i was 15 me and my buddys used to go to this restaurant to drink beer. no one ever carded us there
but then we used to tip the waitress really good.
but weird in my 20's i was carded all the time
oh well

i mean alcohol on the campus. i know theres always the groups thats always smoking but i dont believe there are kids drinking and keeping drinks stashed in their lockers & backpacks lol.

There is actually sound reasoning behind the drinking age in the US. There have been studies that show that the brain is still developing, and continues to do so until about 21. Hence the drinking age.

Course, I also hate alcohol with the fiery passion of a thousand stars.

The drinking age doesn't change anything. It's 19 in Ontario and I'm 20 and hardly drink. If there's people who like to drink till they're almost dead then the drinking age isn't going to stop them. Almost EVERYONE in high school use to drink and the drinking age didn't stop them from getting booze! There were 'cool' parents and whatnot that provided it, so the drinking age could have been 17 and it still wouldn't have mattered.

They get booze -- and binge. In countries where the drinking age is lower, there are far, far fewer problem drinkers at any age, as was said:

I think there should be no drinking age, countries with no or lower drinking age actually have fewer binge drinking problem.

As for those "cool" parents, one solution here would be to have parents take classes for supervising kids with alcohol, and let kids drink at houses where a "certified" adult is around -- not even necessarily family.
It should also be legit for kids to drink as long as they're accompanied by their parents or older brother or sister.

That's easy: the drinking age as it is, is killing kids -- lots of kids. Without adult supervision, they make stupid decisions, and thousands every year in the U.S end up injured and dead. The law should be modified to permit teen drinking with competent adult supervision.

I don't want it lowered. Don't want a bunch of 18 year olds in my bar getting sloppy drunk. No thanks.

Stupid objection: the bars can choose their own age limits. If it's your bar (I'm assuming you mean you own it), just set a limit and check I.D.
Or the law could say kids can drink, but not go to bats.

Could care less.

But i don't want it lowered PAST 18. I don't want jailbait in the bars with me.

Hell, i'm kinda glad it's at 21 - i don't want to have to check everybodies ID.

Also a stupid objection -- see above.

Just as a matter of saving lives, we should lower the drinking age, in the company of certified competent adults.

I say just leave it.

Young people are going to Drink no matter what. And people in general will continue to be stupid with alcohol no matter what age it is.

Just leave it.

Either lower the drinking age to 18, or raise the military enlistment age to 21. If you're old enough to die for your country, you're old enough to drink alcohol. All of that being said, I don't advocate the excessive use and abuse of liquor among young adults. To me the best solution is to raise the military enlistment age to 21. We shouldn't be sending teenagers to war anyway.
