Your title is about racism, but you highlighted a part about income levels. Why?

It would be interesting to compare interracial marriage stats between straight couples and gay couples. I'd love to see data around how gay men tend to pair up racially vs their heterosexual counterparts...

I just want to note that when I took a social anthropology class, we noted that when ethnic/racial barriers begin to break down in terms of marriage, the primary form for quite a while is dominant-race-male with inferior-or-minority-race female. The reason is fairly simple, and still holds today: it's easier for a male, especially a successful male, to stand up to the way things are and do as he pleases than it is for a female, while at the same time it's easier for the family of the female to see the choice as marrying into a better future.

That breaks down only slowly, but will do so more rapidly once mixed couples become common enough it's no longer really an uphill battle for the "odd ones out" to choose to go against tradition.

We also saw what is reflected here: newcomers to a society who are of minority status, who marry into the majority race/ethnicity, tend to be high achievers, energetic and driven, and thus catch the eye of the dominant-race males. Here, that translates into higher income. I think there's little doubt that Asian immigrants to the U.S. have a tendency to be over-achievers, which puts them right in that slot.


Something I didn't see here, but have read before, is that in communities with more ethnicities and especially more mixed marriages there is far less racism. If that's true, with the one-on-five rate for mixed marriages ion the western U.S., we should be seeing serious decline in racism over the next two decades.
