The Exorcist 'greatest horror movie ever' ??

no i dont really agree..i like the movie...but thre are scarier movies out there..

i dont know...look at what jaws did to people lol.....a whole bunch of people wouldnt swim in the ocean lol

I think in terms of all around quality, it is the greatest. The acting, writing, cinematography, direction, special effects and music were all excellent.

But I think the scariest would be 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.'

Definitely, the bloodiest.

For scaring the shit, The Exorcist wins hands down IMHO.

I've never seen the movie. I read the book before the movie was made. The book scared me so bad I slept with the lights on for 2 weeks. I am still scared to see the movie. Seriously.

.

There is a huge difference between mental horror (the kind that work on your mind and make you keep watch over your shoulder for a long time afterward) and shock horror (where something goes 'boo' and you jump).

The Exorcist was mental horror, and those who were affected by the movie were affected for a very long time.

Horror movies today depend upon shock horror to scare the people, but they rarely have any lasting effect.

I, personally, don't watch shock horror films.

One good example of mental and shock horror in the same movie is The Haunting. The 1963 version was a superb horror movie which never once showed a ghost and very few ghostly events. Everything was implied and it scared the hell out of a lot of people because their brains filled in everything the camera didn't show them. The 1999 version simply sucked because it tried to do the brain's job, and no-one can scare you better than you can scare yourself.

Holy crap yes, yes, yes. I think given the context of when The Exorcist was made, it is one of if not thee scariest movie ever.

I mean seriously?

(posts this picture and runs out of the thread...I can't look at it!)

the exorcist?

i would have voted for glitter with mariah carrey myself...

Depends upon the definition of "greatest."

It certainly did more psychological damage in the 1970s than any film has done since then.

People were fainting, vomiting, and running out of the theatres. If that is the definition of the 'greatest horror movie ever' then I think it still holds the title.

Cloverfield did the same thing though so...that criteria is not that trustworthy.

Yeah, even people were afraid to go to church after this movie!
Btw, i think the exorcist is way funnier than scary.

That's what I feel about the movie. To me, it's not scary at all...it completely makes me laugh. Very disappointed in this movie...personally, it's crap as a so called horror movie so no, not the greatest horror movie...at all!!

^ You undoubtedly would be thinking differently had you been around during its original release. During its time, there was nothing else like it.

I think it's up there, but it doesn't deserve the title as the "greatest"

Yes, I remember you telling that to me once already. I know that but I wasn't around that time so, obviously, I can only judge it based on my subjective experience in more recent times just as you judge it based on your subjective experience back then.;)

Interestingly, that ghoulish face image appears in only one frame of "The Exorcist" if I recall from what I read. It's subliminal, and the moviegoer may not even realize that it was there, as it appears for only 1/24th of a second, but it gets into the subconscious mind.

I know that they re-released the "version you've never seen" a couple years ago (which I bought because I had to) and I think the face that appears in the stove when the lights were flashing and the phone was ringing was the original. The image that flashes quickly when Reagan is having blood withdrawn at the hospital was added for the newer version iirc - along with the spider walk down the stairs with the vomiting of blood.

There is so much subliminal imaging in that movie, and that's what I think makes it scary.

As an aside, I noticed something the last time I watched it, but I think my eyes were deceiving me ;)

i enjoyed the excorcism of emily rose alot..although it wasnt really terrifying just eerie.... I have never been as afraid of a movie as i was of a movie called Bless the Child....which i watched for my 12th birthday ahah i dont know if it was as scary as i remeber it though
