The Exorcist 'greatest horror movie ever' ??

Although i may think the film is funny, there is one particular scene i cant watch - during the exorcism, Reagan floats off the bed, holy water ripping her legs to shreds and her eyes going milky white.... absolutely terrifying.. Im getting the shivers just writing this........

"The Exorcist" definately deserves the title of the greatest horror film ever made. It scared the shit out of me the first time I saw it, and it's still extremely disturbing. I love how the film scares you in a psychological way, not just in a shock cheap scares way. The most disturbing thing to me in the movie is the masturbation with the crucifix scene. (Shudders.) And that white ghoul face is all kinds of scary. I literally could write an entire essay on the religious aspects of "The Exorcist." I really love this movie.

In terms of its ability to induce dread? No, not in the slightest, though this is of course an entirely subjective opinion. I was raised on horror movies; my Mother is a horror movie nut, and the one she always warned me of was "The Exorcist." As a result, the movie took on an almost mythic dimension in my mind, especially since I'd been watching films such as "IT," "Hellraiser," "The Evil Dead," "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," "The Shining," etc since I was very, very young. When I finally got to see it at the age of eight, I found some parts of it faintly hilarious (I couldn't stop laughing at the "Jesus fuck you!" line), some parts marginally disturbing, but nothing to write home about. Overall, I was left feeling faintly disappointed.

Possession films in general don't really hold any appeal for me, especially when they have overtly Christian overtones. It always strikes me as faintly absurd that these apparently ultimate evils can't find anything better to with their time than go around possessing little girls. Wouldn't a pope or president be more appropriate?

For my money, movies such as The Shining, The Blair Witch Project, Noroi, The Wicksborough Incident etc are infinitely more sophisticated in terms of the means they employ to induce dread in the audience.

LOL! What about the crucifix masturbation scene..."Fuck me, FUCK ME!!!". That had me almost rolling on the floor! LOLOL
I laughed throughout almost the entire movie.

That's what I feel about the movie. To me, it's not scary at all...it completely makes me laugh. Very disappointed in this movie...personally, it's crap as a so called horror movie so no, not the greatest horror movie...at all!!

Okay...I'm not being a smart ass here. Serious question. What are some of your favorite horror movies?

at the time. for sure
nowadays, it could be disputed
depends on the threshold of terror a person can take
