The local PBS affiliate has been run by some junior college drop-outs recently, and all sorts of technical slip-ups have erupted as broadcasts have been hosed as they go out over the air. Yesterday, viewers would be watching a show, not the one on the program guide, and 15 minutes into it, the program would cut back to the scheduled program with no explanation. Pay NO attention to the man behind the curtain!
One of the unscheduled airings was
Firing Line with Margaret Hoover, an episode interviewing Peggy Noonan and plugging her (then) new book,
A Certain Idea of America: Selected Writings, featuring, I believe, 80 of her WSJ articles since 2017. When the airing cut out and went back to the schedule program, some local blather about Alabama's leglislature, I was mildly frustrated, but PBS affiliates air certain programs 3, 4, even more times, each week across different broadcast stations, and over the weekend.
But, no dice. Couldn't find the Sunday airings I normally catch. Looked up the Program Guide on the main affiliate, got a web page for
Firing Line with Margaret Hoover, but it was just a list of programs without titles, with a generic description of "Margaret Hoover hosts debates and interviews", but the same for every episode linked. The titles were just serial numbers (e.g. #805, #804, etc.) So, I went to the
Firing Line website, only to find the episodes available, but not numbered.
Now, I have watched the full episode, and Peggy Noonan's insight was indeed prescient in describing how Trump rose, but also telling was her naivete in predicting the governmental institutions, including the Senate, the FBI, and others, would stand against the undermining by the executive via the appointment of incompetent and corrupt minions, bent on political sabotage rather than the good faith conduct of government's functions.
She predicted Hegseth would likely not get past his lack of qualifications and be confirmed by the Senate. She as much as said Kash Patel would be confined by the institution of the FBI. The interview was filmed in December 2024, so none of the outrages of the actual Trump administration had begun. Her entrenchment in the past seem to really speak to how Trump has been able to outmaneuver the Old Guard in the conservatives. The past five months have proven her so stellarly wrong, her very relevance seems impugned.
