The Fall of Rome [collapse of the American republic]

The local PBS affiliate has been run by some junior college drop-outs recently, and all sorts of technical slip-ups have erupted as broadcasts have been hosed as they go out over the air. Yesterday, viewers would be watching a show, not the one on the program guide, and 15 minutes into it, the program would cut back to the scheduled program with no explanation. Pay NO attention to the man behind the curtain!

One of the unscheduled airings was Firing Line with Margaret Hoover, an episode interviewing Peggy Noonan and plugging her (then) new book, A Certain Idea of America: Selected Writings, featuring, I believe, 80 of her WSJ articles since 2017. When the airing cut out and went back to the schedule program, some local blather about Alabama's leglislature, I was mildly frustrated, but PBS affiliates air certain programs 3, 4, even more times, each week across different broadcast stations, and over the weekend.

But, no dice. Couldn't find the Sunday airings I normally catch. Looked up the Program Guide on the main affiliate, got a web page for Firing Line with Margaret Hoover, but it was just a list of programs without titles, with a generic description of "Margaret Hoover hosts debates and interviews", but the same for every episode linked. The titles were just serial numbers (e.g. #805, #804, etc.) So, I went to the Firing Line website, only to find the episodes available, but not numbered.

Now, I have watched the full episode, and Peggy Noonan's insight was indeed prescient in describing how Trump rose, but also telling was her naivete in predicting the governmental institutions, including the Senate, the FBI, and others, would stand against the undermining by the executive via the appointment of incompetent and corrupt minions, bent on political sabotage rather than the good faith conduct of government's functions.

She predicted Hegseth would likely not get past his lack of qualifications and be confirmed by the Senate. She as much as said Kash Patel would be confined by the institution of the FBI. The interview was filmed in December 2024, so none of the outrages of the actual Trump administration had begun. Her entrenchment in the past seem to really speak to how Trump has been able to outmaneuver the Old Guard in the conservatives. The past five months have proven her so stellarly wrong, her very relevance seems impugned.

You can probably mark today as one of the last days of the Republic as TrumpCo. move to turn the National Guard and perhaps even the marines on the civilian population.

I marked the last day when the House did not move to impeach a president who accepted a luxury jet and was so bold as to even suggest it would remain his after leaving office.

When the lawmakers cease to enforce laws due to political fealty, the government is no longer of the people, for the people, or by the people.

The GOP has been "expressing concern" in order to appear moral, to appear principled, in the exact same way Trump has made statements of concern about Putin, but was careful to never take even the slightest action. They just utter sound bites to deflect our flaccid media.

So? Do you finally admit republicans in congress are not cowards but co-conspirators?
Do you finally admit they are pretend cowards who are and always have been 100% in lock-step with Trump and the fascist take over of our country?
Do you finally admit republicans have used cowardice as deflection and deceit to hide their dictatorial agenda and their collusion to overthrow the Constitution and democracy?
Do you finally admit republicans in congress have been complicit in the implementation of this agenda all along and that any feigning cowardice, or "expressing concern", or "what they say in private", is nothing but big fat fucking lie to scam the public?

Watch what they do, not what they say. Every fucking one them will end up, in way or another, voting for this shit. If there are a few hold-outs who vote no, just watch, there will always be enough yes votes to pass the bills. Because those hold-outs are part of the scam too, to make the party "appear moral or principled". They will make sure there aren't enough no votes to defeat the bill, just enough to fool you. There are no "John McCain's" left in the republican fascist party.

I guess the question now is will we as a nation rise to meet the challenge, or go whimpering into the abyss.

As much as I'm done with the status quo, I'm nonetheless supporting candidates, contacting Congressmen, and attending rallies.

I'm going to the local No King rally in Huntsville this Saturday, to counter the dicktaster's parade in DC. Is anyone here going to one in your area?

The slaughter in Minnesota of the Speaker and her husband is case in point, yet another one.

Unless the rest of our "leaders" take this tone very soon, it won't matter. Too little, too late.

No media coverage, of course. Gore is a non-player. He in an absolute political sense, represents no one in a post-office backwater.

Our former presidents, every single living one of them, should unite and deliver such a message, with the same frenzy.

The SCOTUS ruling today barring circuit judges from making national injunctions until cases are ultimately through appeals is another major marker for the end of the Republic.

The GOP used this very power of lower judges to continuously block actions during Democratic administrations, and now are denying the same right to their opponents during a GOP presidency.

The GOP has done this over and over and over since at least the Clinton Administration, claiming every possible legal right as dissenting views, and then shutting down the same right when the office turns.

The current ruling greenlights Trump's minions to run unchecked as they trample the US Constitution and terrorize universities, foreign nationals, liberal charities, and everything else.

On an almost positive note, I truly believe the administration will be drinking its own bathwater and overplay their hand. The result will be just as James Carville opined this week: if they try to block the 2026 elections through subversion, it will trigger an actual armed uprising.

I keep wondering if we can afford to wait that long.
I'm not sure short of that what will happen of enough import to be unquestitonably the sign that the MAGAts will fight open and fair elections.

We probably should be updating this thread...because we are witnessing the fall of the US republic on a daily basis.

We (the US) are become the Evil Empire in full.

The hyperinflated military budget requested for 2027 is par for the course.

The deployment of militia (and ICE is a militia) to the airports is par for the course.

The illegal creation of the Board of Peace, giving it US funds never auhtorized by Congress, and the illegal use of the Patent Office, to shroud it is par for the course.

The sham control of Venezuela's oil revenues is par for the course.

The illegal seizure of Georgia's voting records is par for the course.

The illegal seizure of transgender patients medical records from multiple institutions in violation of HIPPA under the sham pretense of investigating Medicaid fraud is par for the course.

If we were China, the augurers would be telling us the government has lost the Mandate of Heaven. The government itself should fall, not just the Trump regime. That the levers of power could be so controlled is clear evidence that we have been using a failed system. Throw it down.
