  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

The gift if the gab.

What you don't realize is that Perpetual Nature Conservancies are totally unenforceable. They get overturned every day. In Oakville and Burlington, everything north of Highway 5 was supposed to be a conservancy. Look at it now . Google it, or better yet, read your deed and see for your self.

I am perfectly well aware of what our deed says. And I know a lot more about land conservation legalities than you imagine.

You should chat to your houseplants about this subject.

So, the thread was about talking to houseplants. Rareboy enters the thread and turns it into an opportunity to insult the OP and then hijacks it to be about his philanthropy.

When bitterness means the opponent cannot be allowed to enjoy a "neutral" thread, the well is poisoned.

This is the same harrying you used to do with Pat Grimshaw's threads, and others. It's not enough to engage on the topics you disagree about, you have to harass and hector until you've ensured that they don't get to enjoy apolitical threads without your attacks.

You're the problem, Rareboy, not the solution. Stop doing it.

The OP opened up a different line of discussion with his response to a simple comment.

Relax.

Um, no. You had to show off what a good citizen you think you are, and I just showed you that your attempts may be in vain. If you think land on the outskirts of a major city can be protected from urban sprawl, you are sadly mistaken. Sorry but that is a fact.

^^ What about having it set up as dedicated 'open space' or as a park? There's parcels of land here that the original owner(s) specified that's what they wanted to happen (in the deed, or however it is you set that type of stuff up )... and that's exactly what happened with the land, its parks now.

Back on Houseplants...
I wonder what my plants 'thought' of the local FM Alt-Rock station that I left playing all day (since that station was playing all music from local Colorado bands today)

As usual, you deflect your culpability when you only entered the thread to insult the OP, before you began any hijack of the topic. His response was the purpose of your insult, to bait the OP and derail the otherwise uncontroversial thread.

It is forbidden by the Code of Conduct. Keep politics in the political threads and stop dragging your petty wars from thread to thread out of pique.

Your pattern is tiresome. You spread your shit and when you get called on it, you fall back to your own ad hominem, namely what you did in this thread. You repeatedly allege your supposedly woeful opponents are miscreants and friendless, and you can't even be artful about it. You merely sling it as mud in any political campaign.

It's imputed, false, and irrelevant, but serves your petty purposes.

Stop hijacking threads for your vendettas.

I would point out that you perhaps need to read the CoC.

You have been dragging your petty gripe with me from thread to thread to thread for weeks and weeks now.

My original and subsequent comments in this thread have nothing to do with politics....you are the one dragging the subject into the thread.

Seriously. You need to step back.

Everyone you have a beef with in this board, "needs to step back." We think it's YOU who needs to "step back" and check your superiority complex. Maybe go for the therapy that you so readily advise others to attend.

Now back on topic. I don't quite buy the carbon dioxide theory as it occurs in the same room, whether we are speaking to the plants or not. And studies prove that plants DO respond to sound, loud rock music being the most effective. Weird.

Caroline Wall has a neat hypothesis. It need not be anything to do with sound at all.

Instead, maybe people who sing to their plants are just better at looking after them. "You're more likely to remember to water and care for the plant if you're taking the time to serenade it, even potentially noticing issues sooner than you might otherwise," she says.

http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20160118-can-your-plants-really-hear-you-if-you-sing-to-them

Unfortunately all the 'experiments' about sound and plants are either limited or laden with problematic potential errors in the studies themselves because of other potential variables.

The Mythbusters' trial was a perfect example.

What you would need is a single greenhouse on a a sprung platform that cannot transmit vibration or ground temps, with only artificial light, artificial heat, constant humidity, single source for soil, containers, a drip irrigation system that can only deliver exactly the same amount of water for each trial and a single person to talk or yell at the plants.

You would be able to run consecutive trials for silent, classical music with sweet talking, yelling with hard rock, or other combinations including groups of plants versus individually potted plants or combinations of companion plants.

Given that it is known that plants in nature communicate through their root systems and foliage, it shouldn't be too difficult to determine the actual impact of external versus soil transmitted sounds and vibrations.

But until someone does a properly controlled trial....chattering to houseplants remains something that is probably of more benefit to the lonely people who talk to their plants and not the plants themselves.

In a study performed by the Royal Horticultural Society, researchers discovered that talking to your plants really can help them grow faster. They also found that plants grow faster to the sound of a female voice than to the sound of a male voice. Other studies have experimented with different sound levels and even the kinds of things that are said to plants—do they respond better to compliments or insults?
