Yesterday I saw The Golden Compass/ Northern Lights. Try as I might I really could not find anything that would offend the Catholic church enough to recommend that others not see the film. It was kind of a yawn.

Are the Dark Materials books more specific in their criticism? Or did I just miss something?

The Golden Compass is going to be a trilogy. In the second film you will see a species of Angels and some of the angels are gay and actually have a love scene.

I've seen the movie twice now. There are definitely layers of meaning going on in it, and I think if you take the Magisterium to mean the Catholic Church, it would be offensive to them. It suggests that the Catholic Church is about mind control, whereas you have "free will" being important with Lyra. I haven't read the books so I'm just guessing here.

So I made a thread a week or two ago about the movie / book. So the movie is hella confusing but the book, which i am ong a few chapters into is so much more clear. It is going to be a triology as is the book series...but here's the kicker. Don't read any further if you don't like spoilers...

The series ends with them killing "God". Apparently as the books go on there is a more religious undertone in them. I guess we shall see. Hope this helps you out!

We should distinguish between the reactions of Bill Donahue and his so called Catholic action organisation, that does not speak for the Catholic Church and the rest of the Catholic world.

Outside the United States there has been no controversial "church" reaction to this film.

Yes, the books are less thinly veiled attacks on the RC church. The movie was "watered-down" to get it made. The current question is... How will they film the remaining 2 books which are more blatantly anti-religion in their stance?? Great advertising ploy!

i saw the film after reading the books, i actually really liked the books and being brought up in the catholic church have a deep hatred of it. it annoyed me that the book was waterd down for the screen and not only did they take out almost all jibes at the church, they didn't ( warning spoiler) show that the gypsy kid that lost his daemon died and decided to miss out the most crucial bit of the book!!! i'm rambling here but the point is, the book was written with a messege and being that we have the right to free speech should not have been waterd down. they may as well not have made the film.

btw: yay for gay angels!!!

His Dark Materials are my fave books. I did like the film, but I think that it was way too short, the studio had to put it's fingers in it and edited out loads of footage (the ending being cut was the director's decision, though, and it does make sense in a way, but I really wanted to see the original ending).

Anyway, everything about it was spectacular, the acting (the only acting I wasn't too fond of was Iorek, he seemed too theatrical at times), but there was so much missing. I don't really mind that they toned down the anti-church message, I mean it is all there still, just more metaphorical.

I do hope that the sequels get made, because the first one is rather promising and if Mr. Weitz just gets to do it his way, I have full faith that they'll be great.

I liked the books which I read loong before the movies came out. The movie pretty much BOMBED and as bad as it was there will NOT be a sequal...come on, it did about as good as Eragon! AND YES the books are pretty anti-christian, no denying it, but Phillip Pullman is an amazing writer and you should definitely read the books.

Also, the angels arent really having gay sex any more then Lyra and Will are having underage sex. Get over it!

It kinda only bombed in the US, it's been doing pretty well in Europe.

What? There have been several Catholic school boards here in Ontario that have banned the books from their libraries. And I'm sure that there have been other such incidents across canada as well.

I'm sure the Vatican wasn't too happy about the film either.

I am sure that Canada must have some negative influences, overflowing from their puritanical neighbour.

Here in Europe we poo poo such matters, as being more worthy of gross paranoid, overkill.

I enjoyed the film. Although it's true that it didn't do justice to the books, it was really better than I had expected.

hmmm...

shouldn't any controversy enhance the book sales or the movie's box-office receipts [somewhat like happened with the Harry Potter series]

I fell asleep during the movie and beat up all the chairs around me.

It was my girls revenge for taking her to see Becoming Jane.

dude no one said they were having sex but they were gay it actually didn't click when i was reading the books i really dont know why.
