I was eating with a couple of friends very late one night in 1984 in Savannah, Ga., in a 24 hour place called The Kettle when Christopher Atkins came in and sat in the booth across from us with two guys and a girl. All four of them were slightly drunk or high and extremely friendly, and Atkins signed autographs for a good number of people. Even in that condition at 2 AM he looked like he’d stepped out of an airbrushed photo spread. He seemed as grounded and unaffected as you could hope. He shook my hand as we were leaving and said, “Nice meeting you.”
Later that night my hand stayed very busy.
