Larry Kert (1930-1991) is probably best known for originating the role of Tony in the Broadway production of “West Side Story”. His experience was far from ideal…“Faggot! Do you have to walk like a faggot? Can’t you move like a man, you faggot! Jesus Christ, just stand straight, faggot!”No, this isn’t a Marine Corps drill sergeant cracking under the demands of “don’t ask don’t tell,” or an “ex-gay” minister whipping reluctant converts into God-fearing heterosexual shape or simply a typical ultra-macho father upbraiding a less-than-macho son. It’s Jerome Robbins rehearsing Larry Kert in “West Side Story.” It appears that Robbins was an ass that everyone wanted to deal and work with. Kert's last stage appearance came in a touring company of La Cage aux Folles but he missed performances because of illness. Kert died, at 60, in his Manhattan home from complications of AIDS.

I’d love to see a sign on the door at a gay bar saying you can’t enter if you shave off your pubes. A “no tattoos” sign would be great, but it would exclude too many guys.
