This was taken at the famous Hole in the Wall bar in San Diego. It’s 1957 and these men are serving on the USS Essex CV-9. They’re on shore leave. The man in the white suit is my father. Later that evening he’ll be watching boxers train in a sparring gym, and the only other observer will be Mickey Rooney. They’ll be friends forever. Three years after this shot is taken I’ll be born. Isn’t life amazing?
