What amazes me about the very early gay porn pictures is that the people dared take them.
Not only was what they were doing illegal but back then it was not easy to develop the film and print the pictures. And the more people who were involved the higher the chance you could get caught and possibly prosecuted or at the very least be subject to the scorn of the community.

The history of porn, and the methods to create it, goes all the way back to when we were living in caves! Apparently, our fascination with ourselves, and others, is as old as our species! "Morality", and "shame", weren't a consideration until much, Much, MUCH later.
Early photography was a huge undertaking in time, material, equipment, and money. You couldn't do it without someone else at least knowing you were up to something, even if they didn't know precisely what. It wasn't until 1948 that Edwin Land's Polaroid photography became commercially available. Though it took years to become generally affordable, FINALLY we 'deviants' could make our own private porn, even just the soft stuff, without having to be artists, or developers, nor have to purport some form of justification (unless someone found it). Yes, what's hot about the old vintage photographs, even as late as the early/mid sixties was the exhibitionism of the models. Exhibitionism has always turned me on, as both a participant and an observer.

My Dad had a Polaroid camera - took a few pictures myself - but usually burned them up the next day!

That is definitely staged. The 'ship' is a painted backdrop. You can see the difference in the 'deck' where the canvas touches the floor at their feet. The guys are standing on a wooden floor, with a barrel and length of rope as props. That image took a lot of planning! Given required exposure times, the models had to stay still. I wonder how long they couldn't move with the one guy's dick up the other guy's ass.
This one was probably easier for the models ...
... as were advances in 'snap shot' camera and film technologies for later generations ...

Is it just me, or do others find the vintage porn much more arousing than the modern stuff? Maybe because of the forbidden nature of it, the riskiness of the times, etc.
My own personal favorite era is the late 60s, very early 70s. This was when we went from nudity for "physique enthusiasts" to first forays into sexual activity. I love the first story film shorts put out by AMG, Zenith Productions, RA Enterprises, etc. My prized possesion is owning the short film "Cellmates" which featured the first male/male kiss in softcore porn!

They don’t look like the “model” type we tend to take for granted now who looks like he spends all his time at the gym and getting manscaped. The men of older porn were hot but not flawless (I.e.,teeth not perfectly straight, occasional pock marks, etc.) which makes them (in my opinion) seem more real and less intimidating. It’s like they’re were sexy without even knowing it.
That’s not to say that I would kick any of the hot porn stars of today out of bed, mind you.
