That's not an easy question to find the answer to. I would guess somewhere around a million or so. I'm basing that guess on the suspected demand for the most popular gay porn, the ease of duplicating VHS tapes, and the marketing channels during the 1980s. If I stumbled across them, here in the Midwest, the country had to be pretty saturated.

It's a (very) long shot, i know. but does anyone have stills (or links to movie) from Oliver Krist in Pleasure Express. He was in the original VHS film but seems to be edited out of the DVD release and I can't find any pics. No idea why he was cut out. He's in the opening scene when the twosome becomes a threesome. It's one of the hottest vintage scenes and Oliver is gorgeous in it. Oliver is on the left in this (although from a different movie). he was also in Sex Revolution but I don't think that was ever digitally remastered for DVD so all still are hazy

As Kyanimal has said - I think the number of copies was a hell of a lot more than that.
You have to think about how many guys had never had the opportunity to see gay porn - and for how many closeted guys it was their first experience in seeing something they had only dreamed about. Porn theaters - especially gay porn theaters and adult book stores were in the cities but most places did not have one and getting a porn video to watch at home was the guys only opportunity.
There have been a lot of articles that have talked about for many couples Disney movies for the kids was the justification for buying a VHS player but the real driving factor was to see porn.
Straight guys had a variety of magazines to get off to for years - but for gay guys there this was something new - and I think there was a lot of pent up demand.
