Your question aroused my curiosity, too, so I tried to do some tracking. Though I'm not 100% confident about what I found, I believe that's Sir Ian McKellen (for sure), and Bruce Weber's model Peter Johnson (maybe), from Weber's movie "Chop Suey". The 80s were my 30s. It wasn't until I hit 30 that I gave up my pretense of preferring girls (having had more than my fair share of luck with them), and went on an all beef diet of guys. SO, I was a newbie to the gay scene when that AIDS epidemic struck. Though I was like a kid unleashed in the candy store, luckily I was also shy/hesitant when it came to actually sampling all of the tempting merchandise.
I made a lot of friends, had Great times, and also met my partner, who I'm still with, shortly after coming out. Unfortunately, many of our friends did not survive that terrible viral outbreak. Thankfully, lessons were finally learned, new meds were developed, and testing positive is no longer the death sentence that it used to be. For me those times were indeed, "The best of times, and the worst of times."
