Re: The Golden Gays Continue.

That scene wasn't all that bold for it's time. During the early 20th century it was quite "innocent" for men to express their admiration, even love, for each other. Homosexuality wasn't acceptable, but emotions in males were recognized as normal.

Sex was kept "under wraps". It wasn't something to be discussed in "polite (public) company". It wasn't until the 50s/60s, with advancing technology in communications, the advent of "mass media", that society's little dirty secrets began seeing the light of day. Though most knew what went on behind closed doors, they feigned public shock, and mortification, at such things being uncovered. Scientific research projects into Human Sexuality? WTF?

That's roughly when men's feelings took on a darker, more "perverted" sense. Something to be socially avoided at all costs, because that could hint at, lead to, "dirty" sex. It was during the 60s/70s that heterosexuality was emerging from the shadows, and the public couldn't get enough of it. X rated films in major theaters? OMG! (Where can I get a ticket?)

During the 70s/80s homosexuality began coming out of the closet. And, then, the AIDS crisis hit, making it not only "immoral", but fatal. It wouldn't be until the late 80s, and into the 90s, that being "gay" began to be understood, and more socially acceptable. Yet, still, Today, we have a ways to go, but we're getting there.

Although today there is much more acceptance and less stigma attached -

In some respects sexuality and homosexuality being "out of the closet" has taken away the situations where it was " "innocent" for men to express their admiration, even love, for each other" and in some aspects made it even harder for people just coming to terms with their sexuality to deal with it.

Before being gay was out and addressed guys showering together after gym, changing in front of each other, even sharing a bed was very common and no one thought anything about it - after all they were both guys so what could happen? Since sex between guys was not really talked about situations that later on would lead to gossip and whispered "did you hear that..." were never addressed.

Now there is much more concern that showing emotion or even something as basic as changing in locker room could be interpreted as someone being gay.

That is very true. Though I don't foresee the pendulum swinging back to public gang showers (except in the military), there is also a sliver lining. The move toward more male modesty has been a recognition that, yeah, guys are sensitive creatures, too. And, with increasing social awareness, and acceptability, of the LBGTQ community, the label "Gay" is loosing it's "bite".

Even today's fractious political climate has spawned an opposing up swelling to respect our differences, and emphasize our commonalities. I'm not sure if I'll live to see it, but I do harbor the hope that we'll reach the point of interacting with people as "simply" People, and everyone can be who they truly are without labels, divisions, or fear.

Here's to moving forward, by taking a few steps back, to when "Boys will be boys", and that's perfectly fine!

That is true - but in some ways I also think that it has made it more difficult for younger guys to just fool around and have fun without a label being applied to it. No one said "I am gay" or "I am bi" - we just said "I am horny" and what happened happened - but because it was not talked about - no one thought of it as a lifestyle - it was just an activity. Some guys ended up gay - some did it once and never again - but no one put a label on it. Now you see 9 and 10 year old kids coming out on YouTube - and sure it is great that at that age they already know and are comfortable with it - but I wonder how many who are not that comfortable avoid them for fear of "guilt by association".

That is a wonderful sounding goal - but unfortunately human kind has never achieved that lofty goal and I am not sure we ever will be evolved enough to do it.

Perhaps we'll never completely achieve full Liberty, and the unbridled Pursuit of Happiness, but at least we're working on it. Our Republic is a Grand Experiment. Yeah, we are hitting a few snags, but the system seems to be correcting itself, as it was designed to do.

Thankfully, there have been, and will always be, guys who like to Play. \:/ ..|
