Seems they have it down to three people for Bilbo Baggins.

When Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro get The Hobbit going before cameras soon, Ian Holm, who played Hobbit hero Bilbo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, won’t be back in big rubber feet. Casting Bilbo is a big deal; any actor chosen will have to hold his own against a horde of effects while still putting across a lot of character. Now three names are increasingly being rumored as options for Jackson and del Toro: Dr. Who’s David Tennant; Wanted’s James McAvoy; and Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe. Musing about the options and probability of all three after the break.

None of these talented young men trip my trigger. Bilbo wise, Radcliffe is tied up with that potter gig for a lest a year, Tennant to soon after Dr. Who, McAvoy na, maybe Elijah Woods with a little make-up magic. What your thoughts.

In the comments they mentioned Martin Freeman. But he isn't in the running, so that isn't happening.

Personally, I think McAvoy would be perfect for the role. He has the acting chops, and the ability to play different types of characters. I haven't seen a lot of Dr. Who, but from what I watched, Tennant seems a little too goofy for my taste. As for Radcliffe, I just can't see him in the role personally.

Last I heard, they are starting filming in 2010 and ar gunning for a late 2011 release for the first and 2012 for the second film, but that seems short for a movie of this scale. Either way, I think its a few years out. That could have changed. I like the idea odf McAvoy. He's definatley got the skills for it.

Would it be too much to ask for someone who looks like a young Ian Holm?

Any thoughts on who could do that, cause I'm drawing a blank...

Seems they won't be announcing the casting choices at Comic Con afterall.

Yesterday we helped perpetuate the rumor that Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson might announce the actor who’ll play Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit while at San Diego Comic Con next week. But reportedly, that isn’t happening. No surprise, but too bad. News would have livened up the Con quite a bit. Why won’t we hear anything? Because according to Peter Jackson, who spoke to Empire, the script isn’t done. “No, we won’t be announcing Bilbo for a little while. We’re starting to think about casting, but we’re knee-deep in the script right now. And when we do go to actors, they’re probably going to ask to see a script, so we’re powering ahead with getting the first draft done.”

Well as long as it's not Daniel Radcliffe I don't care, I have to see enough of him already. He's so crap.
