Vargas and Rockwell´s work shared the same graphic "style", the trends of a particular era. Phillips´ is post-Marvel+cyber era... but the comparison I established was based in how representive is their work of the prevailing sexual fantasies and glorification of female and male physiques in their respective times.

Several of Phillip's works quote Norman Rockwell intentionally. For example, the Thanksgiving scene, the doctor's office, etc.

I don't know if i'd call the scenes depicted as fantasies so much as ideals that we, as a community, need to strive for (and which we at present fall way to short of). For example, several of his works depict interracial friendship and romance. Also, they convey a sense of guys who look out for each other, as opposed to backbiting and underming.

While there's definitely an erotic element to his work, I think what he is attempting to do is normalize gay sexuality by depicting gay love, romance, erotica in conventional contexts -- which is to say he has a greater purpose (unlike Varga, which is pure erotica). While I don't suspect he has a wide audience outside of the Gay community (though it would be nice if he did), I think the message he is conveying to us gays is very important: there's no reason why Dick and Tom can't be just like Dick and Jane :)

I assume this is some sort of computer enhanced "art" which ever technique is being used.

Sorry to say, but I cannot say I find it enjoyable in the least. If this is the future of "art?" then I would say the primative cavemen paintings had more style, depth, feeling, creativeness and over all skill then what I have seen here.

Nothing about this "art" feels "human about it." And without the sensation of a real human entity having "been involved" the work does not seem to have any life to it .

Obviously the creater, not artist, was a human and told the computer what to do, but some where along the line, something seriously has been lost in developing what I would consider is "art."

If I am in error in my comments about how these works were "made" please so inform me so I can re-think what I have posted. Otherwise, I stand by my posting and my reaction to what you have asked me to view.

Absolutely no offense is intended at you personally and or the person who did these works.

Time does march on, but if this is a peak into the "future" of art - I shall be more then happy to be left behind in my own world of ignorance and darkness.

And what is it about homosexual art that makes it so remarkably tedious and boring and lacking in the warmth of imagination.. Probably with the exception of Robert Mapplethorpe and his photographs, Tom of Finland and the other copycats seem to have nothing on their minds then fucking big cocks and owners who all look like maniquins. They abound in boredom

I'll be the first to admit his work is a tad insipid, but it's also kinda important. by deliberatly using Rockwell settings, he is attempting to normalize gay life. Like Rockwell, he doesn't attempt to depict reality so much as a standard we need to aspire to as a community.

I think the thing I like best about his work is that he shows all the races getting on, and getting it on:sex:

How can you not appreciate the charm and warmth in Joe Phillips' drawings?
