  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

The hot terrorist

So, he apparently has back problems. Gives him great pain. But his family is rich AF. They could easily afford his treatment.

I'm having a hard time understanding how he got down this path.
I’m still trying to verify the validity of his “manifesto” which he allegedly wrote and posted to an online forum just before being arrested.

In the posting, he details how his mother has suffered excruciating back pain, and how UnitedHealthcare allegedly manipulated her access to care in order to make as much of the treatment her financial responsibility as possible. According to the post, she is miserable, and she will never fully heal.

If this is true, and they have the same genetic disorder, perhaps looking at a future of severe pain and watching his mother suffer was enough to “push” him to murder in order to make a point. Maybe he didn’t want to “get away with it”.

That will be for a jury to decide.

Newsweek article on his back surgery

I have been waiting for someone to name what was wrong with Mangione (or his mother, depending on which reporting one has read).

I suspected that it was going to something like Pars Defect or spondylolysis.

Here's the thing: a reputable neurosurgeon would do everything possible to avoid doing surgery, especially surgery involving internal fixation, on the spine of a 26 year old. The only time I have ever seen anything like this is extreme cases of scoliosis or a traumatic injury. Spinal surgery is always a last resort because outcomes are so unpredictable.

But what doesn't make sense to me is, "What does anything of this have to do with the insurance company?". Mad at the surgeon, I could understand but the insurance company didn't sign the surgical consent forms.

We're likely dealing with someone who either has a mental health issue and/or an addiction to opiates. That makes more sense to me.

That said... I'd still do him.

Being a Brit I am obviously not au fait with the intricacies of the US Medial Insurance system bullshit, but I suspect maybe the insurance company maybe wouldn't underwrite his or his mother's full medical bills

A body like that needs a regular and thorough exercise program. How does that fit with his having so much back pain that sex isn't possible?
He got into being athletic early on in life. The thing about the body is there's a kind of memory effect that I can't fully explain. I just know that it's the reason why when you're fat it's so hard to lose weight. And if you were once fit it's a lot easier to get back into shape.

I've dated many guys that haven't worked out for years and still look like super models. Again, it's some kind of memory effect.

The guy was on a tour of the Far East after finishing graduate school. Then he was living in Hawaii in one of the most expensive real estate markets in the US. He was hiking and doing a lot of physical activities that would not be consistent with someone with chronic back pain.

Something about all this doesn't quite add up.

Maybe it is his 'I'm autistic' excuse for his behaviour

Has he offered any excuse? Officially?

One of the reasons that it is called a "spectrum" is that, like sexual orientation, a lot of people fall somewhere between the extremes. If everyone on that autism spectrum killed a CEO, there would be a lot of vacant executive suites.

Now, is there a behavioral excuse for the people offering to pay Mangione's legal bills? :)

Has he offered any excuse? Officially?
No, because judging from his ranting at the arraignment, he has no remorse.
