Wasn't surprised when I did a search for this on jub that it didn't have it's own thread.

Who has also seen this?

It's been in my Netflix queue with a "very long wait." Weird but true, the director Kathryn Bigelow was once married to Oscar rival James Cameron.

great movie......but its really not a war movie at all

Finally saw it in Dec. IMO while it was solid filmmaking and Anthony Mackie's atypical performance was not only riveting but a breath of fresh air, it was a disappointment. It's biggest flaw was that it was repetitive. I realize that their mission is just that but Bigelow could've made each one interesting as opposed to interchangeable.

LOVED this movie...it was great...it wasn't a "war" movie which was interesting, but it had a story and great acting and great direction.....glad that it's getting the recognition from the award shows this season!

If it is not a war movie like all the promos seem to show, what exactly is it?

well...obviously it is a war movie...but not in the typical sense in my mind. If you saw other Iraq war movies like Stop/Loss...it's all about these young guys and their ptsd and all that...this just had a different story...it opens with a quote about how War is a drug...and it shows how this adrenaline junkie can really be a war hero...and I think the bomb squad is something that hasn't really been seen in a movie...at least none that I've seen

Oscar nominee:

Writing (Original Screenplay)

“The Hurt Locker” Written by Mark Boal
“Inglourious Basterds” Written by Quentin Tarantino
“The Messenger” Written by Alessandro Camon & Oren Moverman
“A Serious Man” Written by Joel Coen & Ethan Coen
“Up” Screenplay by Bob Peterson, Pete Docter, Story by Pete Docter, Bob Peterson, Tom McCarthy

that's not the only nomination....they are tied with Avatar for the most nominations...also up for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and I wanna say 2 more for a total of 6

I havent seen it but it is on my Direct TV-PPV listing...It will probably do well at the Oscars even though it was SHUT-OUT at the Globes & the Sags...

Out of all the Indy films with Oscar Buzz it made the least amount of money...Only $13-15-million...

yes but Kathryn Bigelow did win at Directors Choice and Critics Choice Awards for Best Director. and the movie itself won Best Drama at Critics Choice.

A stunning achievement in cinema. Every shot in the film is studied and planned. Its execution is precise and exact. The control and direction of human actors is masterful. The effect comes across as fluid and improvised.

"The Hurt Locker" will not win Best Picture. Kathryn Bigelow will win the Academy Award for Best Director.

The Hurt Locker' wins six BAFTA Awards

"The Hurt Locker" won six of its eight races at the BAFTA Awards in London including the top prize of best picture. Since the BAFTAs were moved up in 2000 to take place while academy members were still voting for the Oscars, these laurels have foreseen only three of the nine best-picture winners: "Gladiator" (2000), "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" (2003) and last year's "Slumdog Millionaire."

Unlike this year's Oscars, there were only five films nominated for the top BAFTA and the winner was decided by a simple vote count. Of the four other nominees, all of which are also in contention at the Oscars, "Avatar" took two of its eight races, production design and visual effects; "An Education" prevailed with just one of its eight nominations, best actress (Carey Mulligan); "Up in the Air" went one for six winning adapted screenplay; and "Precious" came out on top in one of its four categories, supporting actress (Mo'Nique).

The BAFTAs have done better at predicting the acting Oscar champs since the date change. Of the 36 acting Oscars handed out this decade, 22 went to BAFTA winners. In 2006 and 2007, all four BAFTA champs went on to win at the Oscars. Last year, three of the four BAFTA winners repeated at the Academy Awards; Mickey Rourke ("The Wrestler") was the exception.

Yeah, I didn't love it at all, though I can see how well-crafted it is and every critic I've read this year has raved. I reckon it's ultimately not my kind of movie.. but it's certainly achieving all kinds of laudatory recognition ! Can it beat Avatar at the Oscars ?!?

Same here. I feel like a dumbass because I missed whatever it was that supposedly makes this the likely best picture winner. It had a couple of good suspenseful scenes; that's about all I can remember.

Can it beat Avatar at the Oscars ?!?
It definitely will not beat Avatar; right now it is more politically correct to praise a movie that glorifies our men at war. Voting for such a movie makes people feel smarter.

Frankly though, Avatar had a much more memorable impact on me. I left the theater saying "I must see that again" (and I did). With Hurt Locker, I can hardly remember anything that happened. Sure, Avatar's story may not be original, but there is much more to a "best PICTURE" then story. It's about the whole package. There's already an award dedicated solely for best story (best screenplay)

I was slightly disapointed with the movie. All the reviews I read raved about the movie so I was very excited to watch it. Don't get me wrong, the movie was good, but it wasn't groundbreaking. Maybe I need to re-watch it.

"Precious" was leading the Oscar race like a stampede..Film critics didnt take to it getting the praise and decided to throw their support to the "Hurt Locker"...The movie bombed @ the box office but its garnered recognition by the support of Film critics...The MAJOR film festival circuit didnt even acknowledge it in 2009.......There's a movement to award the First female a "Best Director" Oscar...."Avatar" will probably walk away with "Best Picture" and Kathy will take home "Best Director"...

I need to check my PPV and see if it is still available for ordering..

I saw this movie when it came out on Blu-Ray and I was really impressed by it. Boyfriend was the one who wanted to see it but by the end I really thought it was worth the purchase.

The movie was excellent. It was a war film, but concentrated, from a specific point of view. War was/is a drug for this character. Fulfillment for him, but at whose cost?

I liked the movie and it had some nail biting suspense in it. But I just don't see greatness in it.

If Avatar wins best film it is richly deserved. I was so enthralled by this film because of the imagination and techniques that went into it. For the 2 hr 40 min. I was mesmerized and thoroughly entertained. Great 3-D
