What I want to know is how the son is dealing with this. If he supports his father in any way he should be shunned by his friends and community.

Pink was just talking about this on twitter, there's a lotta sons/daughters who hate their parents for this very reason. I do not envy their holiday gatherings. I'm one of the lucky ones that has a supportive family even in spite of their religious beliefs. I can't imagine having a parent who votes against your rights. :(

PS: On second thought I'd pay a million bajillion dollars to be invited to that Thanksgiving dinner. #dramacity #hotmessexpresspullingintodysfunctionjunction

They may lose their right but they still get a place at the trough.

Ya right, my head would be swivelling like a bobby doll watching the body language.

There are plenty of self loathing gays who would tolerate this shit from a shit parent. We need look no further than the log cabin assholes. I would not have invited this guy to my wedding if he were my Dad. Fortunately my dad loved me no matter what.

"The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function." --F. Scott Fitzgerald

Not that I know or think either the legislator or his son is necessarily of first-rate intelligence, but it is possible, even laudable, to continue enjoying, loving and supporting friends and family who think and act in ways that we find disagreeable, even reprehensive. Do you want this father and son to hate each other?

(From what I've read, particularly in quotes from Gerald and Sara Murphy--long-suffering friends from his time in France and later back in the US--Fitzgerald could be a really terrible person. Awful. Great writer, but awful.)

To further digress, The New Yorker archive has a great, atmospheric piece on the Murphys by Calvin Tomkins, later expanded into a book, "Living Well is the Best Revenge". More interesting, to me at least, than the Thompsons, father and son.
