The iPad Killer

I'm keeping a running tally on my iPad of how many times you've said you were leaving this discussion..

Yeah he just likes to stick his fingers in his ears and ignore what other people are saying and continue to dig himself deeper into a hole instead of admitting falsehoods.

iPad is good for some business so that you can show your work on the run.

If you want a real internet experience, use a proper desk top computer or a proper laptop.

I've heard of this song before. Every smartphone released after the Iphone was supposed to be the "iPhone Killer." Now they're doing it with the iPad.

- Wow - .. this thread has grown since I last checked/posted on Sat

There aren't many steps you need to take, and it isn't difficult to do anything on Windows 7.
This is one of the few I'll have to disagree on...
Networking in Windows 7 is a major pain (unless all PC's are Win 7) Micro$oft really fu---d up here .. as I mentioned my Netbook is Win 7 (my only dislike about it) I've been battling the thing trying to get it to 'talk' to my other computers... I did actually get it to 'talk' to one with Win XP, but Win 98 & Win 3.11(for workgroups), it won't even 'see' those.
If anyone knows how to make this work let me know (network uses IPX/SPX & NetBEUI protocols...which after some searching I got installed on Win 7 since Micro$oft "forgot" to include them)

Also I have an old Mac G3 that I got basically free a few years ago (I know...the horror I own a Mac, what a worthless thing it is)

I'm pretty sure the answer to this is "no", but anyone know if it is even possible to make that & windows see eachother on a network? Where is the network configuration (if such a thing exists)?

Does it even have a 'real' file manager like windows explorer where I can go in & just see the contents of the harddrive (LOL I'm asking way too much there)

I hate Mac's what a pain, user-unfriendly thing they are  ...the only reason I want to mess with that thing is it has Photoshop.

^^ What OS is on the G3?

For some comic relief, have you ever seen the icon used in OS X when you network with a Windows box?

@andysayshi
It is OS 9.1 (had to go turn it on to find out)
-------
I've never seen the OS X icon for networking with Windows (since I haven't used it) .. but looking at your pic LOL that they used the blue screen.
-------
Speaking of windows blue screen's .. what is that thing in your avatar?

This brings back memories. I had a Power Mac G3 server tower that I slapped an overclockable (hit 500mhz with the manual overclock pot/switch) G4 chip paired with a Radeon Mac Edition 32MB graphics card to play quake3 and other early openGL games. Good stuff back in the late 90's early 2000's. :)

Unfortunately, with a machine over 10 years old you'll have to really scrounge to find the necessary tools or info to reliably network it into the Windows world. It'd be kinda like trying to add a Windows ME computer to a modern Mac network. Personally, if it won't accept OS X 10.1 or 10.2, I'd cut my losses and make a funky fish tank outta that old beast - especially if it's a Bondi Blue iMac.

There are plenty of Open Source alternatives to Photoshop. And you can use Adobe's online PS version, Photoshop Express, for free too!

It's Data from Star Trek having problems with his view screen. The BSOD is a little enhancement. :-)

That TNG episode is awesome. It's where Data, Chief O'Brien, and counselor Troy get possessed by aliens that try and hi-jack the ship.

And the BSOD for that .gif is the shiznet!! I've always liked seeing it on random forums.

Lol, that's the one! It was a great episode. Can't remember where I found the original GIF, but I re-tooled it a bit especially for JUB. I used to change avatars every 6 months or so but I've kept this one for a year or two now, at least!

LOL considering it was basically free there'd be no 'loss'. Mostly I thought it'd be interesting/fun to see this could be done (& cool if it actually worked). It is that blue color, but its a tower-style so not an iMac.
Windows ME? LOL now there's some junk...

I actually have GIMP which is on that list. (might download one of the others)

LOL on the enhancement.
I was taking a wild guess that it was _maybe_ an ATM or some store's cash-register type program

LOL but I actually have turned it on multiple times & even got online with it...so I know it will physically 'see' that a network exists. (& no I don't hate that thing.)

Giancarlo, the pundits have been predicting the demise of Apple since at least 1998, when I bought my first strawberry iMac.

In fact, over the years, they yelled, screamed, and hollered for everybody to dump their Apple shares, because surely it was going to fail.

But yet, now it's one of two or three most profitable computer companies on the earth.
To be fair, Apple was bailed out by Microsoft in 1997 with a $150 million non-voting stock investment. The pundits weren't wrong. Apple then is not Apple today.

Exactly! And many people add keyboards to tablets essentially making them netbooks... It's hilarious to me. You end up spending more on a tablet AND keyboard... then you would on a far better netbook. Yeah, Ipads... woeful for my usage. Lacking all sorts of features...

And yea I might be harsh... but I speak my mind. :) No fluff.

I care about speed and quality... not looks. That's all Apple is. They are looks. Whether it be any of their devices. I'm a practical user who demands quality components... and I'm sorry but Apple is far from the best. I'll take my Toshiba laptop and Cowon MP3 player. Don't yet have a netbook... really don't have a use for one... but if I were to get one... Asus all the way! Asus Eee PC > Ipad.

"I think it's clear that specs don't matter most because if they did, then Apple would not be the success they are today."

Reaaallly...? Beyond Mp3 players and Phones... where is their success? Don't say computers please. They suck there. With $500 I can build you a fantastic computer better then most Macs.

It's too bad people didn't give the Zune HD (which Microsoft sadly ended... I think?) or Cowon J3 more of a shot over the Itouch/ipod. I guess people just look at advertising and believe the hype over real quality.

I will give Apple credit for their iPods. The ones I've had always worked right out of the box. I could even bypass iTunes to transfer my songs and videos since my computer recognized it as an external device.

Now why Apple discontinued that feature with their iPhones remains a mystery!

You sure are passionate when it comes to your tablets MGB. Good for you.

I posted ^that^ from my iPhone 4s. Teehee.

When you truly love something, I guess you'll defend it to the death. He's had other anti-Apple threads but I think he may just have a point! If the Apple die hard heart throbs just take a moment to look at how spectacularly Apple is failing them, they'd see it gets better!

For those price conscious/avid readers either the Amazon Kindle Fire or B&N NOOK may be just the device! After months of anticipation, Amazon’s new Kindle Fire is finally available to purchase. With a number of Kindle e-reader devices already under its belt, Amazon is upping the ante with the new Kindle Fire. In addition to being a best-in-breed reading device, the tablet has all the basics — apps, web surfing and email. Even better, you can purchase one for $199. That price point may forever change the tablet landscape. With a 7-inch color display, this is a tablet that combines the functionality of an e-reader with great multimedia capabilities for streaming video or listening to music. It runs Android, but a very customized version, uniquely tailored to the Amazon experience with its own app store, free cloud storage, a fast web browser, and of course millions of books and magazines. Expect this to be one hot item this holiday shopping season.

Barnes & Noble is getting in on the tablet wars too. The company’s new NOOK Tablet also runs Android and is priced at a competitive $249. That’s a little more than the Kindle Fire, but still half the price of the cheapest iPad 2. The NOOK offers less of an integrated multimedia experience than the Kindle Fire, but some customers will appreciate this. It is still a very capable e-reader, but offers plenty more including a dedicated app store, HD movies from Hulu and Netflix (with a subscription, naturally) and a vivid 7-inch touchscreen. For those seeking more flexibility than the all-encompassing Kindle Fire experience, the NOOK is worth a look, despite the slightly higher price tag.

For the variety seekers/Android smartphone owners, the Samsung Galaxy Tab series offers just that. Available with 7-inch, 8.9-inch or 10.1-inch screens, there is probably a tablet to fit any lifestyle at a variety of prices. The Samsung Galaxy is a fine and powerful alternative to the iPad 2 and offers a number of useful features. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 on Verizon, for example, allows customers to use Big Red’s super-fast 4G LTE connectivity when away from a Wi-Fi signal. All the Samsung Galaxy tabs have access to hundreds of thousands of apps from the Android Market and are great for gaming or business. Also, Samsung Galaxy tablets allow for a great deal of customization and tweaking. This is one of the advantages many Android users prefer over Apple’s slightly more ‘closed’ (though stable) iOS operating system. In addition, if you’re already an Android smartphone user, you may find staying in the same stable helps when it comes to syncing data and sharing apps. The brand new Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus is a great deal with some retailers offering it for $299.

If you're a business person, the HP Slate, which is powered by Microsoft’s Windows 7 software, is suitable for professionals who need the flexibility to work away from their traditional desktop or laptop setup. The secure, familiar environment of Windows (and its ubiquitous Office suite) is essential in certain corporate realms, and the Slate allows use of both the touchscreen or a digital stylus. It’s a pricey item though, available for $799. But that’s what business accounts are for, right? If your corporate network does allow for Android devices, a good alternative to the Slate is the Lenovo Thinkpad, which starts at $499. This has a nice stylus for taking notes, and offers the rugged dependability of the IBM/Lenovo brand, as well as easy sharing and optional accessories like a fold-up keyboard.

Of course, if any tablet has the potential of at least matching it when it comes to high-def graphics and plenty of power, the upcoming Asus EE Pad Transformer Prime could have a shot. Sure, it’s unlikely to be as successful as the iPad, but alternatives are great for competition and should keep Apple on its toes. The Android-powered Transformer Prime is set to hit stores next month with a $499 price tag. It sports NVIDIA’s hugely powerful (and efficient) Tegra 3 processor, boasts a vibrant 10.1-inch 1280x800 touchscreen, 1GB of RAM and 32GB of storage ($599 for the 64GB model). It also offers a neat keyboard and trackpad dock for extra versatility. Perhaps if Asus and NVIDIA are smart, they will launch the tablet with some gaming exclusives to show-off that new chip. This is one powerful beast which should be able to handle any task thrown at it.
I think the iPad may have at long last met its match in the all new and powerful
Asus Eee Pad Transformer

Smoke on this pipe, Apple!
I personally don't have a preference but I do think the tide is turning against Apple.

Jeebers, this thread is still going?

Arcturus, you seem like an okay guy (if a little misguided re your choice of computing, but hey - nobody's perfect, right?;)) with your head screwed on right. So why don't you get out of this thread, and start posting all over the rest of the site, huh?

Go on, you know you want to. :D

Right now I don't think one has a lead over the other.

I have a xoom. My girlfriend has an ipad. And my boyfriend just got the new iphone. Both iphone and ipad are identical in every respect save for size. My xoom has cons and pros.

Pros:

Generally speaking Apple products just work. Righ out of the box. No manual reading. No hours of endless research. The app store is humongous. The apps themselves are very original and creative.

The xoom is basically a pc in your palm. I love the usb connection it has. Drag and drop. Simple as that. No BS. It has removable storage. I have several SD cards with different libraries. Switching them in and out is a breeze. Plus I like the big screen.

CONS:

The ipad nor the iphone have removable storage. I find this very limiting. The forced use of itunes further limits these other great wise devices.

The apps on the xoom are just pitiful. For some reason the andriod market has apps that will only work on certain devices. The xoom seems to be on the losing end of things. My girlfriend's girlfriend has a droid that gets access to way more apps than my xoom. For some strange reason the xoom can play some audio files but not others. Very strange. No such same issues with the ipad or iphone as they play everything but flac. the xoom cannot play hd movies. A real bummer.

I think if android gets its shit together, its devices that are technically better than apple's have a real chance. At the moment apple's simple user interface experience has the upper hand.

As all of these rumours come from sources OTHER than Apple, why would you think Apple is "fucking with us"?
