I just got one. My understanding is that with the 3G one you can download from your phone. I have the cheaper one that uses my wi-fi to download with.

The main benefit for the one with 3G is that you can buy/download the books wherever you are...

This is would be more appropriate for someone that travels a lot and doesn't have access to wi-fi...

Although, quite honestly, I buy/download all my books well in advance and would never really need that feature...

If your friend likes to read, like I do -- he/she will be blown away!!!

What an AWESOME gift idea!!!

:):):)

^I have an older one that they don't sell anymore -- but it does have what they called back then "whispernet" -- similar to the 3G ones now...

I've honestly never ordered books while on the road -- so a WI-FI version would work just fine for me...

I'm sure that your mother would LOVE one -- I'm now in my 40's and its really nice to be able to make the type whatever size is easiest for your eyes (not trying to say that your mother is having the same problems ) ...

As far as the Sony goes -- my sister bought one for the same reason you did -- she prefers to "borrow" the books from the online library -- unfortunately, she has found that in her state, they don't offer a wide selection...

Have you every had any problems finding titles where you live???

Just curious...

Just curious I bought my boyfriend the Kindle with the free 3gwireless. Will he be able to view the web on this thing or no?

You can, but why? It is all 16bit gray scale and rather slow.

I have a Sony eReader, it is far more open-source and allows borrowing ebooks from your local library (if they offer the service, many do), lending books to friends (just like a real book), and supports many more formats. I’m quite happy with it.

It does not have WiFi, but I honestly see that as just a gimmick. I have over 350 novels on my eReader, do I really need to download another while on a boat in the middle of a lake? Besides, the WiFi just slaughters the battery life. That’s just my opinion.

I don’t know what the battery life is like on the Kindle, but I can tell you that I’ve been rather busy the past couple of months and haven’t been able to really use my eReader very much, and the battery is still fully charged.

Do you guys like The Kindle or The Nook. I like the Nook because you can download from Barnes and Nobles AND other place. With the Kindle you have to stick with Amazon..

Forget about about browsing the web on Kindle. This display is just no suitable for this. It's great for reading though.
Great present :-)

I'm getting a Nook color for Christmas, so I'm a little biased. Generally, the Nook reads more formats, including ePub, which means you can pretty much put anything on there. (including books you've torrented) Amazon has the Kindle pretty locked down.

I have a Kindle 3 with just Wi-fi and it works fine. I didn't buy the 3G one because I don't live in the US and would have to pay if I transfer own files on it via 3G.
It's very convenient that you can just send PDF files to a special e-mail address and they got downloaded to the Kindle automatically. At work I only have a thin client and cannot connect any USB etc.

The formats are by the way not such a problem. I usually buy ePUB books because there are almost no german/french books on Amazon yet. There are two python scripts to decipher the epub format: ineptkey.pyw is used to download the key from Adobe Digital Editions. ineptepub.pyw is can then be used to decipher the book.
The software Calibre can then be used to convert the ePUB book to a mobipocket book which I can send to my Kindle. The buying process takes at least 10 times longer then converting the book, so I can live with that,.

Surfing the web isn't really fun because the screen is two slow and zooming and scrolling is painful. They webpages are not designed for the Kindle yet. In principle it would be easily possible to adopt web pages to make them more eReader friendly. For phones this is happening (touch firendly mobile versions) but I doubt the the market is big enough for special eReader websites.

Cheers,
Nathan

i have the kindle 2, and the only difference between the 3G + wifi model and the wifi model is that the wifi must be used while in a wifi network, whereas the 3G can be used wherever there is 3g connection (almost anywhere).
