"why are we running? What's going on?" I tried to scream but my voice was muffled. The air was thick and hard to move in. It made my limbs move like a sloth. "des! Des!"
I could see him looking over a ledge but my voice couldn't reach, he turned and smiled at me leaping over the ledge.
I tried to scream but I let out nothing.
I shook awake to wind blowing in my face. Des was driving and it must have been for a while.
"there was a hole in the ground, sorry I didn't see it." des said out.
"no I was having a bad one anyway, how long have we been going?" I looked at the sky and it was deep red it must be late.
"do you know how far the gas will get us?" des frowned a little.
"not far enough I hate to admit, and I haven't seen a single sign of anything alive out here."
I lowered myself and laid my head on his lap, enjoying him for what time I can.
"what do we do if we get stranded out here? We don't have any food or water or anything..." Sensing my neck tense Des place his hand on my arm gliding it along the length of it.
"you don't worry about that, I promise to take care of you."
"oh yeah? And who's going to take care of you?" he snorted.
"what?"
"nothing I just...im Not used to being taken cared of, not anytime recently anyway."
"well ill do my best, that I can promise you."
"IM dead..OH SHIT!" Des screamed as swerved from hitting something tall. The car turned and flipped flinging me from into a boulder pile. I could hear the car still going then coming to a loud stop, my eyes were getting heavy and I could feel my head throbbing. Something stepped out in front of me moving in a curious way, afraid to approach.
"who is he?" one voice asked.
"I don't know... Do you think it's a puppeteer" another answered.
"no-no too far out for them."
a faint humming sound started slowly growing louder.
"your amulet! Its humming! It can't be!"
"get..Des..." Was all I could get out before everything went dark.
All I could feel was a ripple of pain passing Through my head, I could hear two people talking not to far away. I kept my eyes closed and tried to hear them.
"Is it true? Heather said Donovan's amulet Reacted. That it glowed and everything."
a female voice said.
" I don't know, they've said it before and And every time it's a let down. I'm starting To think this all just bedtime stories." a male voice responded.
"Bedtime stories? Why would they lie? What Could they even get from lying about it all?" The doubting voice snorted.
"Us to listen, that's what! How many times Did the adults used to have their "Confidential" meetings? Once maybe twice A month?"
"Yeah...?"
"Well have you noticed? They're having Meetings almost every week now, something Is up."
"I don't see what this has anything to do with The savior."
"Everything! They push these "savior" stories To keep us in line and keep us hopeful that The puppeteers will one day fall bringing salvation and all that noise."
"Your mother would cry if she heard you talking like this."
I tried to hold down a cough trying to force its way Out but it I buckled and let it out.
"he's awake! Go get griffin." the male voice shouted. I opened my eyes but everything was blurry and moving, I tried to sit up but invisible weight pushed me back down.
"whoa whoa whoa, stay down...stay down. You're going to make yourself nauseas if you move around too much."
"is he okay? is Des...ouch...is he okay?" I tried to keep my words together but I could feel myself slurring. Slowly my vision was settling down and I could almost make out the person watching me.
"just relax and try not to move so much."
I could see the bags under the man's eyes and the dark circles starting to form around them. His light beard was scruffy and it stuck out in all directions, he blinked his grays at me looking my face over.
"Joseph move aside, let me take a look at him." a tall lanky man rushed in putting his eyes to mine. I could smell the coffee on his breath, he picked up a stethoscope from a drawer beside me and listened to my chest looking for who knows what. His hair was almost orange and glowed against his ivory skin.
"I don't hear anything unusual but from what Donovan and Mordecai told me you were thrown against a boulder. It bodes well that you're not as beat up as you should be."
"wheres Des? Is he okay? What is this place?" the ivory man smiled.
"my names griffin and I promise you your companion is safe. I need you to rest for now though and as soon as you are ready I will take you to him." I stared at him in the eyes. "please?" he asked.
I lowered my head and closed my eyes again.
"Mr.. Griffin?" a girl called from the doorway. "the I.v. you asked for."
"yes, thank you Ashley." I could hear tiny wheels being rolled over next to me. I shot open my eyes and tried to sit again.
"what the hell is that?!" I shouted out.
"just fluids to dehydrate your body. Your extremely unhealthy." griffin tried to reach for my hand but I snatched it away.
"look, do you want to see your companion?" he asked obviously irritated.
"yes, and don't call him my companion. That's sounds...weird. His name is Destric. So he's okay then?"
"you love this man don't you?" the question caught me off guard.
"I...well I mean he..." I couldn't answer. As much as I wish I could have just said it the simple word was nowhere to be found.
"your stumbling of words says yes." I twisted my head at him.
"what kind of question is that anyway? Who the hell are you? What the hell is this place?"
"IM sorry, you are completely correct, that was an uncalled for question. I just..." He trailed off.
"yeah? You just what?"
"I used to study psychology and human behaviors and when you said Destric's name, your pupils dilated just a bit." my eyes questioned him.
"and that told I loved him?"
"well actually it could have meant that you either loved him or hated him completely but I doubt that you'd be asking for him as desperately as you are if you hated him." he smiled.
"I digress though, the sooner you let us help you the sooner I can get you to him." I darted my eyes around the room deciding it was the better choice.
"okay, go ahead."
