Paid land line phone bill. I've found that land line phones are most reliable after a hurricane (I don't know about what would happen after a major hurricane. I've never experienced one, thank God, and I hope I never have to). Cell phones are unreliable after the storm for a couple of reasons. First, with power outages, cell phone towers have to rely on stored battery power, which tends to get depleted quickly. And second, everybody's out-of-town friends and relatives call to find out how they're doing, and people are calling out to their friends and relatives to talk about how they weathered the hurricane. That overwhelms the system, and chances are that phone calls won't get through. So I have the land line so worried relatives can reach me, and I have a reliable way to communicate in the event of an emergency.
