nice blimp; but it still can't hold a candle to the Graf Zeppelin

It's technically not a blimp --
"Aeroscraft ML866 is the world’s first rigid variable buoyancy air vehicle. It was developed by the Worldwide Aeros Corporation for heavy cargo transportation.

The air vehicle is capable of controlling lift in each stage of flight, from take-off to landing. Unlike airships and hybrid airships, the Aeroscraft ML866 unloads onboard cargo without re-ballasting."

It's more a zeppelin, with a rigid structure -- which is what the Graf Zeppelin was, of course, but the Graf required external ballast, mass it could drop or pick up; this critter just adds or subtracts helium from one or more of the internal bladders. But it's also different in that as it gains forward speed the body itself provides lift, which means it requires less ballasting from the start.

The crazy thing is that the pictures I posted are of the half-scale prototype built for the U.S. Department of Defense -- the real thing is supposed to be twice that size!
