The amazing thing there is that first they blasted gobs of rock into the river, then used hammers and hand drills to roughly level the ledge and roughly smooth the rock face above it, still throwing everything into the river, then they put down gravel, then oak ties, and finally the rails. If it was done today nothing would be allowed to fall into the river -- which would double the construction costs.
