I saw one like that hit the ground about two hundred yards away once; can't recall for sure but I think we were in Kansas, almost to Nebraska. When the countryside is flat like that, there's always the question of whether a car can be the point the lightning seeks (it can, but any occupants are safe -- though not the tires; lightning flows through the metal body then arcs through one or more tires to the ground, cooking/burning the rubber in the way).
