Anyway, I see I focused too much on the thin-strap, high-waistline dresses on some fat cows in the foreground: there are some other more trend-conscious, almost fashion-forward ones, with more genuinely 1920s décolletés.

My guess is that the photo is real and Jack Nicholson was "photoshopped" (or however they did it back then) into it.

What incongruities... I was merely saying that several people (women, what the hell) to the front of the pic, were following war and postwar fashions that were getting terribly outdated by 1921-22; I can only imagine the horror of their wardrobe by 1926-27, when the "real" 1920s, and the "real" XXth century, finally kicked in.

There are glaring aesthetic and 'period' "incongruities" all right in the film, but that was never a problem in a film which gave you sloppiness as mystery.

Then maybe the date on the photo was wrong. The poor fellow below died in 1944 and look what he's wearing.
