Are those some novel form of cooling tower?

They are the structures for the boilers, with the chimneys on top, of the old thermal power station in Sant Adrià de Besòs, one of the independent towns adjoining Barcelona city, being practically just non-incorporated neighborhoods. They were kept as an icon, along with the turbine room building, and they are still deciding what use to make of them.

People are making a big fuss of the flamingo in the picture. That river had been proverbially a hell of dirt for decades, was turned into an urban park a couple of decades ago, and there had been concern after a polluting spill over one year ago.

I hope they decide faster than happened here. There's a town about 15km north that has an iconic smokestack that people have been debating what to do with for forty years -- and two years ago it got classed as unsafe for any use by the state after an inspection showed that even drilling into the old brick to attach a steel framework to hold the thing together would vibrate it to pieces! The only thing that could be done at this point would be to spray the inside with a slow-curing mortar and then pour, in stages, a concrete liner with a steel framework built in -- and that project would cost more than the (prime location) land the thing sits on; it would also just be the start as then they would have to apply some fancy goo to the outside for the old brick to absorb, because the bricks themselves are starting to disintegrate.

Meanwhile, of course, it's a disaster waiting to happen; a 3.5 earthquake would be enough to topple it, and it will fall on either US Hwy 101 and the rail line, a marina, or a couple of small shops.

Found a picture of it from above:

It shows my memory is bad: the marina used to be where that nice smooth silt deposit is with the stream channel running along it!

You mean there's brick somewhere in or around there?

And what happened to the marina?
