Reminds me of a science course in college (designed for people bad at science to be able to fulfill a science elective) called "Fire and Ice"; the whole course was about volcanoes erupting where there were glaciers and/or snow fields.

Underwater eruptions of Aa lava make lava balls. This researcher is ballsy as these can break off with no warning and go rolling along boiling the sea as they roll. The sea floor around some volcanic islands is covered with these except cooled off long ago.

I tried to find footage of what got shown in a university course called "Rocks and Stars" (another of those courses designed for non-scientific types, but immensely popular): lava balls breaking off and bounding downward in slow motion, trailing vapor bubbles. This is the best I could find--
