The GIMP is really good. It's free, open source and pretty much a generic Photoshop. Photoshop is indeed subscription now. I have one of the last stand alone versions they sold. I've used PS since 2000 with PS 6 which I paid like $600 for it then, but was always able to upgrade at a cheap cost over the years. Now, PS is pretty much totally in the realm of the professional, and casual/serious/enthusiast/even pro photographers use Lightroom.
