Evil notwithstanding, Mao and Stalin catapulted their states from feudalism into the 20th century, bypassing the industrial revolution and the Age of Reason, and about four centuries of lag. I cannot admire the men for the suffering they forced, but I must marvel at the gains they made in such a short span.

They stand in stark contrast to run of the mill despots like Idi Amin who did not gain their people anything, only took.

Very true. I didn't have time to list them all, and it's a big list in that administration. But, the buck stops at the president's desk.
