The Most Evil Person In History.

History records that Henry executed protestant heretics before the divorce and then thousands of Catholics who resisted the change. Look up pilgrimage of grace for an example. Ordinary thieves and other criminals were often executed. Forcing a nation to abandon their religion upon pain of death should be enough to get him on the evil list without absolute proof of the exact numbers. Henry was an extreme believer in the divine right of kings, believing that if he wanted to kill some one or an entire group, it was ipso facto Gods will.

You are clutching at straws unless you can provide us with citations to credible sources...that support your understandings.

.I am used to your broad sweeping assertions without providing evidence to sustain your opinions.

I'm skeptical of any history of the Raj which doesn't account for both its goods and its evils. Mr. Tharoor is absolutely correct to point out the crimes of the British in India. But consider the example of the railways, which he maintains were constructed to siphon the wealth out of India through its ports. True enough, and yet in 1929 that same network was transporting a mind-boggling 620 million passengers a year. How did the industrialist raiders' plans for plunder go so far awry?

I'd be skeptical of any review of history that didn't paint a full and balancedR picture of life under any regime, government, or king.

In every country with a coastline railways provide a link to that country's ports to enable exports, and imports. India was no exception.

I cannot imagine any government building, or authorizing the building of railways without connections to a country's ports whilst, providing cross country passenger links only...we should recall that under the British Raj, India was a free enterprise economy with Indian industrialists also participating in India's commerce....

The tracks of the Indian Railway system were built on a scam though. The British government guaranteed the price per mile (double that of the railway in Canada and Australia), gave all the contracts to British companies, but laid the cost of the Indians. The fact that the British also refused to ever transport food on trains did not aid any of the famines that occurred during the Colonial rule. Nor in the long run were the Indians left with much as the British stopped investing in it, and ended up taking 40% of all rolling stock was taken to the Middle East during WW2 and not returned.

Its good that the Indians gained train travel, but no one wonders how the rest of the world got trains without the British doing it for them.

All railway construction contracts were allocated to British companies for in Victorian times it was the British who were the world leaders in the construction of railways. The Indian taxpayer paid for the construction, for Indians were also the beneficiaries. The cost of construction was high because of India's difficult topography.....but what an investment for the people of India to appreciate, and benefit to this very day.

Food products was transported by train across India for the countryside fed the cities....just like any other country....Indian railways was, and remains a life line for India's food chain.

I'd like a credible citation for your reference to rolling stock removed to the Middle East for you may imagine how the defence of India was organized stopping the Japanese advance through Burma, into India....without a heavy reliance on the railways to transport troops, artillery, tanks, munitions etc. to the front line in The Assam.... for India was not too well equipped with trucks to assist the armed forces....relying on bullocks, donkeys, and horses...

lol.

......

The strangest part of this is that it appears you edited my quote to remove all the capital letters. And all just to write 'lol'?

I have no idea how that happened. Very strange indeed.

But the "lol" stands. India gained the most used, most extensive, most amazing, long-lasting rail system in the world. Well over a hundred years later, it remains a marvel. And yes...due to the Brits.

God damn I wish we had given ourselves a train system of their standard then! Cos ours is a pile of shite!

To be fair we ALL suffered from that terrible Bella & Edward fad.
O:)

^ We should also blame her for 50 Shades, as that started out as a Twilight fan fiction piece.

How is George W. Bush not on that list?

------------------

He's not #1, but should definitely be on the list!

A lot of ppl missed the list. Margaret Thatcher deserves an honorable mention for her policies. I'm willing to bet most ceo's of the Fortune 500 should be as well. Anyone who fucks over great swathes of people to make and keep a buck, really. Nestlé, I'm looking at you and the drought.

Nestlé, I'm looking at you and the drought.

They're doing the same thing in Canada. They're paying British Columbia $2.25 per million litres of aquifer water. Now, I'm guessing bottled water comes in 500 ml bottles, so that would make 2,000,000 bottles for $2.25.

How much does one bottle cost off the shelf? Scary numbers... and BC is burning up.
