We've all heard jokes about how the Navy is one of the gayer divisions of the military. I've just wondered if there is any truth in that since I'm thinking of joining and would be curious since I am bisexual.

Anyone have any stories or any experiences?

First of all, don't join the Navy with the intent of trying to find some action.

To answer your question, yes. As an example, read Chuck Palahniuk's non-fiction book, Stranger Than Fiction and the chapter about the Navy. Very interesting read.

In the UK Military there seems to be more out gay people in the Air Force than the Navy. (Thats just an observation not a statistic) lol x x

The US Navy is one of the more homophobic of the sevices (sorry- stevenavy2003). The Naval Investigative Service has been very aggressive in investigating and discharging Navy guys who are gay. I've heard from friends in the Navy that the situation is getting better and that their peers are more accepting but the Navy brass still has a way to go.

Don't believe the Village People- joining the Navy to meet gay guys makes as much sense as joining the Navy to meet Cher on your aircraft carrier.

It may or may not be true, but a (gay) friend of mine was in the navy for a few years (on a submarine most of that time no less) and he said he never engaged in or even saw anything that could be construed as gay sexual activity. He surprised when others talk about their very different experiences.

I've lived in two navy towns and got to know many gay sailors at the bars and in other social situations, and all of them were very clear about leaving "the gay" outside/ashore when they went on base or aboard ship.

Yeah, joining the navy because you hear it's a good place to experiment sexually is like joining the army because they give you a good haircut at the beginning. :)

I was in the Army and the only sex I had was with civilians off post...and that's the best way to do it, whether the military is opened up to gays or not - they still won't appreciate soldiers fucking, whether it's male-female or male-male!
