Henry 'The Tudors' Cavill has been cast to be the next to wear the blue tights:

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - British actor Henry Cavill, will finally get to don Superman's cape in the new Man of Steel movie, its distributor said on Sunday, almost a decade after he failed to make the cut for the previous film.

Cavill, 27, will play the dual roles of mild-mannered newspaperman Clark Kent and his high-flying alter ego in the film, which Warner Bros. will release in December 2012. Its formal title has not been announced yet.

Zack Snyder ("300") will direct from a script written by David S. Goyer and based on a story that Goyer developed with "Inception" director Christopher Nolan, who will serve as a producer.

Cavill is perhaps best known for his role as Charles Brandon, the brother-in-law of Henry VIII, in the royal drama "The Tudors." He was a main contender for "Superman Returns" when Joseph "McG" Nichol was attached as director. But when McG exited the project in 2004 and Bryan Singer signed on, Brandon Routh was subsequently cast.

What can one say, the man is gorgeous. I'm wondering, though, if he is going to bulk up for the role, or if tptb are going for the more Dean Cain-ish look.

Perhaps Brandon wasn't quite up to snuff. According to the article:

Singer's film, released in 2006, grossed about $391 million at the worldwide box office, a disappointment given its reported $215 million cost. An executive at Time Warner Inc-owned Warner Bros. later said the film "didn't quite work ... in the way that we wanted it to."

I thought Brandon did a fine job, just the film itself felt like it was missing something. Although i've never really been that interested in the superman story.
 
I think Brandon played Chris Reeve more than he played Superman. He didn't quite have that charisma that makes him a Superman. More of a Superboy.

Cavill seems great, although it is a bit weird to be sexually attracted to Superman.
 
OMG, I thought HC looked the part when I first saw him in "The Count of Monte Cristo" years ago. I have seen him in a few films here and there and while he has never bowled me over as an actor, I have never thought of him as a bad actor either. The problem with Routh was not his looks (he's gorgeous and looks like he came right off the comic book page), and his performance wasn't terrible, but that he was charismatically challenged, he just lacked the gravitas that a great character like Superman should possess. That being said it's unfair to place all the blame for the underwhelming response (critically, artistically and financially) to Superman Returns on his shoulders, the movie had many other flaws. In any event, as a Superman obsessive I am very happy for this news.

Interesting aside, with this news we now have the roles of iconic American Superheroes Superman (Cavill), Batman (Christian Bale) and Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) being played by British actors.

Captain America is being played by an American though. Thank God! :lol:
 
This should be interesting. I wonder what route they'll go this time, especially since Lois Lane won't be in the film...which I'm oddly not upset about for some reason.
Henry Cavill even as the adorkable Clark look ...

Some of the best American roles have been done by Brits. Scarlett O'Hara for one and there are many others.

I am all for some Henry Cavill doing anything, anything at all. He is one of the best looking guys around and he is a great actor.
