How I'm interpreting this in my own situation is as follows:

Don't change who you are, and don't lose your values for someone who doesn't even care if you are around.

I cared for this person, but I know he wouldn't give two fucks if I were to die tomorrow.

Of course that's not what he will tell me, but I know deep down in my heart that's the honest-to-goodness truth.
