The Normal Heart

You are correct. I've steered clear of these movies for years. I'm not sure what possessed me to watch it but I did. I never experienced Survivors Guilt over the whole ordeal, but the hashing over of all those memories was painful.

Yeah...just seeing the still photo of the guy with Karposis...the purple mark on his face...and I remember the guys who suddenly appeared at the bar with these marks all over them sometimes...before they even had a name for AIDS.

This one guy...I remember he was a Leo like me but I don't remember his name anymore or what he looked like anymore except he was thin with dirty blonde hair...he took off his shoes and socks because he had them all over his feet and it was driving him crazy. I wish I hadn't looked at his feet...I can still see them like it happened 10 minutes ago. I never saw him again after that night he showed us his feet..I used to see him almost every night prior to that...for years. I suspect that night might have been one of his last.

^I'm glad you weren't infected yourself and that you can share with us your story.

I have downloaded the movie, but I can't make myself watch it. If I did I would be a pitiful sobbing homonculus crawled in his bed. I'll keep it for a time when I'm stronger.

^ I actually found it oddly comforting to watch it. Despite my painful memories and the anger it resurrected in me.

One 'good thing' is that I ended up being on the Board of Directors for a national effort to provide information and education on treatment for AIDS. I am thankful that at least I had a means of helping someone, somewhere...even though so many close friends died before the corner could be turned.

I was pleasantly surprised to see so many big names in this movie, including/especially: Jim Parsons, Matt Bomer, Mark Ruffalo, Julia Roberts...

Thanks! I kept thinking about it after I posted and I remembered his face...I get a little freaked out sometimes when I forget what someone looked like....

Thanks for making this thread, miaedu!

I wasn't really all that interested in seeing the film until I read some of the comments here. I'm going to check it out later this evening.

Rarey, have you ever taken the time sit back and talk to anyone who sits back and sees past your stupid ass posts for what they are?

I thought i am the only one you are attacking.
But rareboy is made of stainless steel and is untouchable .... ;)

I thought it was an incredible movie and it will make you cry and make you angry at what a tragic loss we as a community and the world had to face at that time. I don't think we talk enough about AIDS and HIV and what we can do to help one another.

'Fargo,' 'The Normal Heart' top Critics' Choice TV Award nominations

Among them is the recent HBO telefilm "The Normal Heart," which chronicles the early years of the AIDS crisis and picked up bids for Best TV Movie, Movie/Mini Actor (Mark Ruffalo), Movie/Mini Supporting Actor (Matt Bomer and Joe Mantello), and Movie/Mini Supporting Actress (Julia Roberts).

The Critics' Choice TV Awards will be broadcast live on the CW from the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Thursday, June 19, and hosted by comedian Cedric the Entertainer. Will they influence the Emmys?

Where do things stand on a sequel?

It's in the works. Larry is currently working on writing the next chapter that takes place in the mid- to late-'80s. All of the actors whose characters survive, as well as HBO, are committed to keeping Larry's legacy front and center for as long as we can. And I'll direct. Larry's plan is for a trilogy. We hope it happens.

^ thats good. but matt bomer didn't survive :) ...... i hope they can bring back as different characters.

I meant to come here and post on the film earlier. wow. I'm really at a loss for words. So many emotions that I can't begin to put them into words.

I sat there crying like a baby during several of the scenes. All I can do is thank any and everyone who have played a part in continuing HIV/Aids research, developing medicines, pushing for changes in policy and recognition, etc. I can't put into words my gratitude and reverence for those individuals. And for the members here who LIVED that nightmare at it's inception...(*8*)(*8*)

The cast did an AMAZING job, and I was particularly moved by Roberts' and Bomer's performances. Heartbreaking and raw.

I found the movie quite boring, to be honest. The idea behind the movie is good and it can show what gay men had to endure when AIDS came in the picture, but that´s pretty much it. It has been done before, what happened in the first hour could have happened in 30 minutes as well and it didn´t bring anything new for anyone. Just another story.

very much agree.

Ryan Murphy and Larry Kramer’s HBO movie The Normal Heart can count President Barack Obama among its supporters. I hear the president made a surprise call to Murphy today to tell him that he loved the film and found it incredibly moving.

Obama did take a while to come around. If there's anything I can take away from this other than raw emotion, it's that gay politics haven't changed all that much in the odd-years since Larry Kramer decided to pen this play.
