I LOVE instant replay!
Petitte was rocked a bit but held tough....Double or home run,A-Rod smoked
that ball.Great bullpen work from Chamberlain,Marte and ole
reliable Mariano Rivera,who thankfully only needed 5 pitches to end the game.
Great to see Nick Swisher finally get going....he is an EXTREMELY streaky player,real hot or glacier cold much of the time.Hoping the double and homer get him back onto a torrid streak.Phil Hughes is still young,he'll get himself eventually straightened out but the Yankees will not justifiably wait for him at this time.He gets into trouble,he gets pulled...hopefully by the end of the series he can get into a bettt
er psychological frame of mind with a solid effort.
For whatever reason,Cole Hamels hasn't resembled the outstanding ace he was last year at all...couldn't hold the Yankees staked to a 3-0 lead in the second.Ryan Howard having a whiff party....wind him up he'll strike out.Hopefully he'll have to wait til next year to rediscover his swing.I will though say that Jayson Werth is tremendous....looks so cool and fearless and two big home runs in a WS is a great accomplishment.In some ways,next to Cliff Lee and Chase Utley he is the Phillie I fear most.I may loathe the Phillies,but damn I respect them!

Great series,sonny...you know it!
Wow.....after Joba Chamberlain loooked so dominant getting through the eighth....getting a nasty,inside 96mph heater turned around and crushed by Pedro Feliz just burst all of the air out of the balloon for Yankee fans.I was standing up on edge waiting to get delerious when Feliz just shocked the Yankees and especially Joba by slamming the hell out of that pitch.Now a 4-3 Yankee lead becomes a lousy 4-4 tie.I sank my favorite chair in my living room with a dejected,defeated gloom.Sabathia was alright,not great allowing three runs,and not being able to solve Chase Utley....but he was effective enough and kept the Yankees in a good situation.Now this,however.

But Johnny Damon,who's been coming on of late really well,beat down Brad Lidge and demoralized the Phillies....first by his tough at bat top of the ninth against Lidge,smacking a single and heading for second almost immediately,Mark Teixeira batting.He slides into second,pops up real quick having realized third baseman Pedro Feliz(karma is a bitch,ain't it Pedro?)is shifting to shortstop overplaying against Teixeira and no one is anywhere near third.It was amazing,Johnny Damon leaving Feliz in the dust,barely able to get off more than a half hearted swipe to try tagging Damon out as Damon easily made third,no Phillie anywhere near enough to contest him.Got credited with two stolen bases in one play....incredible,just about unheard of.What happened as a result is what demoralized the Phillies.Lidge now has to be mindful not to uncork a pitch in the dirt off his slider....thanks to Damon's quick thinking and hustle he gets into Lidge's head and he has to rely more on his fastball,not risk the slider getting away and Damon untying the game.
Lidge hits Teixeira,first and second.And this is all happening with TWO outs!A-Rod lashes a double to the left center alley and Damon scores....Teixeira to third.It was a fastball,not the preferred slider Lidge can dominate with when on....last year it was noted he was 48 for 48 in save opportunities though he had been much more erratic this season.Johnny Damon made it possible by literally stealing an extra base,and catching the Phillies napping.Alex Rodriguez' finest hour as A Yankee,two outs yet able to take advantage of the situation,and do what New York fans so desperately wanted him to just shut up with the extracurriculars and do.Help lead the Yankees to another World Series championship.With his playoffs,the homer off the camera Saturday night and this clutchest of doubles,all the previous playoff failures,the prima donna drama queen soap opera antics,his past using steroids over a period of time,even his otherwise poor statistical numbers this WS...are forgiven.Alex has finally found a measure of redemption and acceptance.
Ole reliable then Jorge Posada then rips a single scoring Teixeira and Rodriguez,extending the lead to 7-4,though he inexplcably gets tagged out at second trying for a double,fortunately having no bearing on the game... but qualifying him as one of the first students enrolled at the Angel Pagan School of Baserunning.The Yankees now holding a commanding 3-1 lead in the Fall Classic after closer Mariano Rivera set the Phillies down with a quick,uneventful eight pitches.
Definitely a classic ending that will go down as among the most memorable,strangest,most thrilling ever.And it all starts with Johnny Damon,his perserverance,legs,intelligence and hustle.At 36 he may be let go as a free agent after the season,and isn't as consistent as he was in his heyday,but is a winner who does the Yankees and their legacy proud.

Great post Saucy, you nailed the game, very well written.
I would say the 9th inning was tremendous, beginning with Damon
stealing second and then seeing that none of the turkeys were covering third and thought to himself,
hmmmm I think I'll just diddy on over there and steal third too.
I know I was hard on A-Rod and saucy rightfully corrected me, he was the guy who helped get them there.
In fact if you Goggle Clutch, his pictured pops up,
Anyways he musta read our posts cause he has been coming through ever since.
Tonight could spell the end for the Phillies, but they have Lee on the mound and he beat us up pretty good in game one, dono if the boys have him figured out yet to beat him tonight. Plus AJ is on for us on short rest.
But hey, it's the World Series and he should be pumped and ready to kick some Philly butt.

Funny, after watching those Philly fans all excited at the top of the ninth waving those freakiin towels like loonies only to have to later use those same towels at the end of the inning to wipe their teary widdle eyes. Yeah, except for our beloved Scrub I reall dislike those Philly fans, even that mascot Phillie Fanatic ant eater or what ever the fuck that is bugs me.
So if we loose tonight and have to take the series to NY that will be ok cause then we can kick there buts at the stadium in front of all those Yankee fans, and that will be awesome. Of course here is a evil twisted sadistic part of me that wants to see the Yankees celebrate on the phillies field...but we can save that for some other time when the Mets win the NL East.

Utley was outstanding, two home runs which makes him the second player to have two multihomer games in a World Series
Lee didn't have his best stuff. He allowed five runs in seven-plus innings, but the offense bailed him out.
Pitching on short rest didn't work well for Burnett, clearly out if gas and totally ineffective, falling behind batters and allowing six runs, four hits and four walks in two-plus innings.
It was an outstanding game, and for a while there I thought the Yankees were gonna pull it off when they scored three times in the eighth inning and put its first two batters on in the ninth. Then Jeter's grounder drove in a run, but Teixeira did not come through.
So it's off to NY with Andy Pettitt (on short rest) and Pedro Martinez.
Gonna be a wild ride in the Bronx.

New York Yankees World Champions!7-3 game 6 victory at the New Yankee Stadium welcoming in a championship in its inaugural season...just like the first championship in the old stadium back in 1923.27 World Championships,the record among sports teams!Congratulations to the players,team organization led by the Steinbrenner family and especially to the fans. The wait,that decade drought between championships makes the ultimate triumph taste even sweeter,and it's great to see the Yankees end the decade as they began it,bringing it all back home.I'm happy but damn I wish it were the Mets doing the celebrating now,and going down the Canyon of Heroes on Friday to an incredible fan outpouring of love and support....know sonny hears me on this.But I'm so happy for New York area baseball and this Yankees team played with class,dedication and professionalism and damn well deserved this outstanding victory!
The best thing about tonight,(and one cannot overlook the stellar show put on by Hideki Matsui....two run homer,double,and single,record tying 6 RBI)seeing the combo of Andy Pettitte giving the Yankees a solid effort on three days rest,three runs in five and two third innings...and Mariano Rivera,going the last five Phillie batters to nail the win.Seen that combo so many times over the years,getting great results in the clutch with five WS titles.Can you believe its been 15 seasons since they first worked together!It's comforting,and along with the steady,often clutch presence of Jorge Posada,and the incomparable,Hall of Fame flat out professional Derek Jeter....it's just amazing and gratifying to see the heart and soul of a team still going out there and getting it done as well as ever.Those days will inevitably end,yet hopefully the seed for a new generation of winners can spring out to take over for the grand old guard.
Thanks New York Yankees,for 2009...you most certainly ARE the best!
The Philadelphia Phillies,much as I loathe them were an admirable adversary and played with grit,heart,and determination defending their 2008 championship.They are going to be dangerous for some time to come,and I hope the Mets get serious challenging them because the Phillies won't back down or bow their heads.They will be tough with a couple of young stud starting pitchers,including that kid Happ tonight who had a very good rookie year mainly out of the bullpen and Kyle Drabek,son of Doug Drabek.The Phillies had a great season,and have nothing to be ashamed about.They have(And you know this is really tough for me,Scrub)my admiration and respect.And they WILL be back with a vengeance next year.I can only hope the Mets can start developing that winning edge that defined the Phillies and now the Yankees.Because only that can win a championship,and as implied the Phillies will do anything they can to get it back.Great night for New York!
