Fiona Apple Reveals 23-Word Album Title; New Disc Due in June​

Fiona Apple revealed all 23 words of the title of her long-awaited fourth studio album on Wednesday (Mar. 7). Here's the full title:

"The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do."

The album name isn't the first time Apple has dabbled with impossibly long titles: her sophomore title, "When The Pawn…," included 90 words!

After multiple delays, the follow-up to 2005's "Extaordinary Machine" is believed to be due out in late June on Epic, according to Pitchfork.

Last month, the singer-songwriter announced a six-date March tour that kicks off on Mar. 19, following a performance at SXSW on Mar. 15.

Fiona Apple Unveils New Tunes at SXSW Showcase​

At turns frenetic, contemplative and whimsical, Fiona Apple made her return to the stage Wednesday at the South By Southwest Music Conference and Festival.

The singer-songwriter debuted a handful of new songs from her upcoming album slated to be released this summer at NPR's showcase at Stubb's Barbecue.



The show was one of the most anticipated at South By Southwest this year, and a large crowd turned out to her early evening set. It's been five years since Apple played a live show outside of Los Angeles and seven years since her last album "Extraordinary Machine." She's got a second performance at a Pitchfork showcase in a church scheduled at SXSW before hitting the road for a short eight-date tour Sunday in Chicago.

Apple talked very little with the crowd during the performance, joking that she may have forgotten to sing the second verse of a new song, but pleased fans with some of their favorites, including "Criminal," ''Fast As You Can" and "Sleep to Dream."

She turned in a spirited performance, overcoming a muggy evening and muddled sound that left her lyrics inaudible occasionally to many in the crowd. Wearing a black dress with a pink tank top underneath and her hair in a ponytail, she used a mug of hot tea to ease her voice through the final few songs. At one point she laid her head on her piano for about 45 seconds, then lifted it slightly as she watched rapturously as her guitar player finished off a song.

Twitter was afire with fans around the country expressing dismay at not being able to attend the event, but videos of her performance and the new songs were quickly fed to the Internet.

The only details released about the new album have been its title and imminent release. Her publicist said Wednesday that "The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do" will be released in June.

Fiona Apple Plots North America Summer Tour

To support her long-awaited fourth album, "The Idler Wheel…," Fiona Apple has plotted a 27-date headlining trek that kicks off on June 19, the same date as her album release.

The reclusive singer's upcoming run will include a stop at Randall's Island in New York for the Governors Ball Music Festival on June 24, as well as a tour-wrapping performance at the Hollywood Palladium on July 29. After playing a handful of shows in California last year, Apple delivered a pair of performances at South By Southwest last month, as well as shows in New York, Chicago, Boston, Atlantic City and Washington, D.C.

Apple has also set April 24 as the release date of "Every Single Night," the first single from her forthcoming 10-song collection. Her fourth album -- its full title is "The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do" -- is the singer-songwriter's first full-length since 2005's "Extraordinary Machine."

Fiona Apple Releases First New Song In Seven Years​

Fans of Fiona Apple are accustomed to waiting for new songs. It's been seven years since 2005's Extraordinary Machine came out - an album that sat on a shelf for years before a grassroots Internet campaign convinced Apple and her label to finally put it out.

But the wait for new music is over. This morning Apple posted a new song called "Every Single Night" on her Soundcloud page. It's from the elusive, enigmatic singer's much-anticipated album out June 19, with a title that just rolls off the tongue: The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do.

Apple debuted a small handful of new songs live in concert at South by Southwest and on her just-completed mini-tour last month, including "Every Single Night." In concert, the song showed a lot of potential, especially in Apple's emotive vocal performance as she sings "I just want to feel everything." On this studio version, that potential is more fully realized. It's a gorgeously orchestrated and delicate tune, full of tiny instrumental details hugging the edges of the arrangement. If all the songs are as excellent as this one, I think we are all in for a treat. June can't come soon enough.
