Re: Madonna the trainwreck, bizzare old bag

Um ... wow. That clip was kind of painful to watch, in any one of a number of ways.

I kept expecting Sigourney Weaver to pop out of some dark corner with a flame-thrower in her hands and hiss, "Get away from her, you bitch".

Re: Madonna the trainwreck, bizzare old bag

I was thinking the same thing. Tina Turner still has it, and I think she's in her 60's now. Could you imagine her yelling "Fuck you" at her audience? Of course, she never published a book with nude images of herself either.
She's not yelling that at the audience. "Human Nature" is directed at the media, that's why she invited Britney to do it.

I've been to the show and she still has it. She made the shitty songs on Hard Candy work live, she's still got it on stage.

And by the looks of her bony ass when she's in that slutty jumpsuit, she's also got an eating disorder.

BA-ZING!!

Fair enough - I stand corrected.

Odd, though, that she would dislike the media when they come after her when a lot of her success is due to being a media sensation. Her legacy will be not as an artist but as someone who effectively used shock value to get attention for her work.

Re: Madonna the trainwreck, bizzare old bag

I don't mind her age, there's no limit on being sexual, I do cringe at her fans who confuse controversial for artistic.

Madonna is (if this is the appropriate word) smart because she knows sex sells. Ground beef sells too, does that make it artistic and conceptualized?

Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see much beyond "Look at me I'm hot, blonde, well-toned, and I'm saying naughty, provocative things."

Maybe I'm missing something.

Nah, she just works her ass off at the gym. A little too much. She should stop with the botox and gain some weight, but otherwise her muscle definition is pretty impressive for her age.

The media dislike is not so black and white. Pay attention to the lyrics and remember what era it's from. She also has Britney on stage who was brutally handled in the media for her personal meltdown. I also think you're really underestimating her impact, but you're entitled to your opinion. At least you're pretty mature about it.

Oh look, another "we're the cool kids because we hate Madonna" thread.
Basically...

Re: Madonna the trainwreck, bizzare old bag

And yeah, perhaps you are missing something. That shouldn't be any concern though because you don't care for her anyway. Not everyone gets the same things from an artist. I'm sure there is music you listen to that wouldn't do a thing for me.

I'm looking at this in a broader context, I'm just fascinated with society's love affair with pretty girls singing about sex. The interesting part to me is you can find dozens of interviews where she admits that sex is what she sells, yet her fans vigorously deny that she does, that there's something deeper, hidden messages.

I don't doubt some of her fans are genuinely into the actual music, I appreciate the diversity of music in general, I do wonder if she'd be as popular as she is if she were a 175 lb. Samalian woman singing the same songs, giving the same performances. I do wonder why people deny other factors that contribute to an artist's success, as if it's about the music and ONLY the music.

Some artists don't engage me but talking to their fans often provides insight into the American psyche.

I do give her credit for staying in shape. One thing is for sure, her children won't have to deal with a phone call that she had a heart attack and is having a quadruple bypass. Kudos to anyone of any age that takes their health seriously.

Re: Under-Rated Madonna Singles

Oddly enough, I think these are among the worst songs I've ever heard. Power Of Goodbye is awkward and unsingable. Little Star is annoying. Sky Fits heaven is just a shitty song with pretentious lyrics.

I always thought "The Gambler" should have been a hit.

Really? Well to each its own. Power Of Goodbye is a really pretty ballad to me. What I liked about Little Star were the mixes on the Maxi-Single. As for sky fits heaven that's more of a ballad too

Re: Under-Rated Madonna Singles

Am I the only one that thought NOTHING FAILS was an amazing single?

Re: Under-Rated Madonna Singles

>>>I always thought "The Gambler" should have been a hit.

I loved that song. My friend misheard it as "Helga", so it's always been called that by us.

>>>Huh? That was a #1 single and is the all-time highest selling Video single ever.

It was the most blatant "hot video sells song" moment in popular music history. Remember when that woman - Cristal Cartier? - claimed that she had written it, and not Lenny Kravitz/Madonna? My question was "wrote WHAT?" It's a drum figure, two repeating chords, and mumbled first-thing-that-comes-to-mind lyrics. It would've made an interesting album track, but it was a crappy hit single.

I notice that all your "underrated" singles are from the later period. Presumably because all her singles early on did quite well. But I don't find any of her later singles underrated. Overrated, many of them, but not underrated. The only single I'd say was underrated was "Oh Father". Similar to "Live to Tell", but it hit harder.

Re: Under-Rated Madonna Singles

Enh, it's OK. It's more fun if you sing it as "Last night, I dreamt of some bagels" though.
