Re: Do You Like Madonna?

I enjoy most of her 90's output. Bedtime Stories had a few good songs, and Ray of Light was great. The 80's stuff is all good fun for nostalgia's sake. I just can't stand the song "Don't Tell Me" or anything since.

Also "Holiday" is one of the most annoying songs I can think of.

I'm not a big fan, I just like some of her songs. I also admire the way she's dealt with fame over the years.

Re: Do You Like Madonna?

As a kid I LOVED her. I had Like a Virgin on record. I listened to True Blue over and over and over on tape. Geee..was I gay?

As I got older I began not to like pop / dance music. I also began to appreciate people that write their own music and build their career on their MUSICAL talent.

I know people lover her here and that's fine, but I think her career would be nothing if it was just based on her music.

Re: Do You Like Madonna?

Let's face it she's not the most talented singer but she makes catchy music...kind of like a certain other gay icon we have nowadays.

I honestly think she would be better off if she didn't make it seem as though she were desperately trying to cling onto her youth.

Britney? Gaga? Kylie? Kesha?
Aguleria? Taylor? Beiber?

Stevie Nicks doesn't have a traditionally brilliant singing voice either, but she had plenty to share with the world. The artist's intent is much more valuable than his/her technique at the end of the day...

Madonna writes her own music. I just wanted to clear that up.

MrMojo, I was just about to post the same thing! lol

Re: Madonna working on a new album...

Meh. Why does she have move and sweat and dance? My favorite Madonna songs are the highly emotional, slower ones where there isn't all that commotion. I wish she would make the transition to being a more mature singer, in line with her age and status as an entertainer.

Re: Favorite Madonna Album, And Why?

Ray of Light then Bedtime Stories

The Bedtime Stories title track, co-written by Bjork, is my favorite Madonna song. It's also one of her strangest.
But Ray of Light just has more songs I like.

Plus those were the only two albums of hers I ever bother to purchase. I haven't listened to them in years though. Actually I think I gave them to my sister.

Re: Favorite Madonna Album, And Why?

I've been listening to Confessions since 05' and still not tired of it. I don't like every song but I do love Hung Up can't get tired of the Abba sampling. It's the song the album that made me a Madonna fan although I listened to some her stuff before. It also seems to be ahead of it's time, most 05 songs sound very 05, confessions has songs that would fit in perfectly well today.

Re: Favorite Madonna Album, And Why?

I couldn't pick just one album.

The Immaculate Collection
Ray of Light
Confessions

I LOVE Madonna and this thread makes me happy.

Re: Favorite Madonna Album, And Why?

there's a special place in my heart for the Dick Tracy soundtrack, but really, I find Ray of Light to be her best album by a wide, wide margin.

even a decade later, it's still incredibly listenable and doesn't feel dated at all.

Yeah! I think I played the "Ray of Light" album until it virtually wore out the first few months it was out. It also introduced me to William Orbit, whom I thought/think is brilliant and a lot of his subtle production techniques and soundscapes on "Ray of Light" still hold aural interest and, as you say, still holds up extremely well.

The REAL meaning of Madonna's Erotica Album

People seemed to miss the point about what Erotica was about. Madonna always expresses her feelings about the past and present and if you follow her, you will see the lyrics have a FAR deeper meaning.

erotica%20pic%20disc.jpg

The concept of the album is how sex can affect a person who is addicted to sex, the aftermath of unwise choices that end in sadness (In This Life was about a friend who was died of Aids during the 80's,) the struggle to understand true love, sexual orientation, romance and intimacy, relationships, and sexual abuse. This album is TRULY a piece of art. For some, sex can be used as an addictive drug, leading to self-destructive behavior.

"Bad Girl" was a message about herself being unhappy with her own sexual addiction and lack of self-esteem. She saw deep down she had a serious issue and staying the same would never make her happy. "Waiting" was an excellent song and I play this all the time. Clearly she was in love with someone and she has to deal with getting over the person or wait for time to pass and see if her love is reciprocated. The message of this song is powerful because the song represents someone in denial. Rain is a beautiful love song and this song shows how Intimacy remains an important element throughout the album.

Overtime, Madonna was able to confront her demons after years of several mistakes leading to a broken heart numerous times due to a lack of self-worth. To release an album to the public that is based on self-reflection is quite brave if you ask me.

Re: Madonna

Lol I own it on vinyl its a double lp. :P The whole album critiques the system of capitalism and explores the concept of greed, materialism, narcissism, and how we relate to each other in society. The meaning to the lyrics are VERY deep you'd have to understand Marx to get what Madonna is talking about. The album cover represents the symbol of being a socialist as her image was made to look like a replica of someone who was a Marxist. Madonna was labeled as anti-bush, anti-war, anti-capitalism, and people got too defensive and claimed she was Bashing America and how she's a traitor to the nation. People were too dumb to see the truth that actually made sense throughout the entire lp. The album flopped because not enough people had enough wisdom to understand the meaning. It was huge in Europe and parts of Asia, where the singles became top hits.

I'm playing it on my turntable as we speak lol. Time to go flip the record soon.

Re: Madonna

Awesome review and I couldn't agree more. Everything about this album is sadly under-rated. Or is it that sad. The fact that it is, makes me just appreciate the genius that is Madonna that much more. <3

Study Socialism from the link it doesn't explain the psychiatric social evolution fully, but it will give you a good idea of how society is structured. Now go read all the lyrics of American life, you will be BLOWN away and realize the album had a meaning you never saw before.

I'm also a huge fan of Music. :) I can't believe they cut American Pie from the USA edition. It was the lead single in Europe. The vinyl has American Pie, so that's a good thing.

Madonna's exploration of socialism has made her more human, and concerned about the social issues that are now a CRISIS in the states. For example, we are a VERY violent country. We have shitty health care, shitty schools, all because of greed and the fact that the rich are paying LESS then what is reasonable.
