Sometimes I wonder why all of us M fans are so invested in her chart statistics and take them so seriously. Because she certainly doesn't care as long as she can trot off to tour with every album and make billions from it. :P

I am not a huge fan of her, I listened to MDNA and there's a few tracks that are very easy listening.

Gang Bang, Turn up the radio, I fucked up, I don't give a etc... are good songs.

After all she's a pop singer and she's doing what she's good at and u cant blame her for that

MDNA" sold 359,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan, and is Madonna's fifth straight studio album to debut at No. 1. It follows 2008's "Hard Candy," which moved 280,000 in its first week. "MDNA's" opener is her best sales week since 2000's "Music" shifted 420,000 when it debuted at No. 1.

*ahem*

Congrats, Madonna!!! And congrats to Lionel Ritchie, who's album would've debuted #1 if not for the 'MDNA' ticket deal.

Madonna Bundles Album with Ticket Sales to Ensure Number 1 Debut

Madonna‘s “MDNA” album is expected be the number 1 album in the country this week. Final numbers will come in later today. But in fact, Lionel Richie, with nearly 200,000 copies of his “Tuskegee” album sold–his best debut in 20 years or m0re–could post a valid complaint. It turns out that a hefty number of “MDNA” albums weren’t sold the usual way. Madonna’s label, Interscope, and Live Nation, which owns Ticketmaster, bundled the album with her ticket sales. For every ticket sold online to Madonna’s upcoming shows, purchasers automatically receive a copy of “MDNA.” They get a link to a free purchase on ITunes, or they can send in their mailing address for a physical CD. It doesn’t matter if the concert ticket is $52 or $350. It’s a smart marketing move for Interscope. It unnaturally inflates sales, and uses “MDNA” for what albums have become–souvenirs, or loss leaders.

The real money is in the live show anyway. No one knows yet how many of “MDNA” sales will be attributed to the Ticketmaster giveaway, but numbers will probably be broken out in the next couple of days.

Here’s the wording from Ticketmaster’s website: Get “MDNA” with your Ticket- Madonna is having a huge party and everyone’s invited. For every ticket purchased online, you’ll receive your choice of a digital or physical copy of Madonna’s new album MDNA. Prior to the album release on 3/26, you’ll receive an email from Ticketmaster with redemption instructions. If you purchase your tickets on or after 3/26, you’ll receive your email within 48 hours. Offer is valid for United States residents & events only. Please note: This offer is not valid for tickets purchased through Official Platinum Seats or TicketExchange.

This is not the first time this has been tried. In the past, both Bon Jovi and Tom Petty had “bundles” with CDs and tickets. They just weren’t as successful. One source tells me that their pick up rates weren’t necessarily that high. “Not everyone takes the CD,” says the source, although it seems unlikely that customers who want a ticket to see an artist don’t also want their new music– as it’s already included in the price of admission.

MADGE'S TWO ON THE AISLE: Madonna's Interscope album, MDNA, which debuted at #1, racking up a year-best 358k first-week sales, benefited from a Ticketmaster bundling with concert tour tickets that added up to almost half of the total, according to the N.Y. Post. Those additional sales were the difference in finishing ahead of Lionel Richie who scored his best first week of the SoundScan era with nearly 200k for his country collaboration, Tuskegee. While SoundScan had made an opt-in offer for an album when purchasing a concert ticket mandatory to count sales in the wake of a previous Prince promotion, insiders insist that the consumer choosing to use a supplied redemption code satisfied that requirement. Other sources claimed the consumer being offered the option of either a digital or physical copy was sufficient. An inside source told the Post: While the public may view it as free,[the album is] actually bundled into the price of the ticket. (4/4p)

Awesome news! I'm sure it would've sold a lot more and without a doudt set a new record if it was sold for 99c on amazon. =P

Congrats, Madonna!!! And congrats to Lionel Ritchie, who's album would've debuted #1 if not for the 'MDNA' ticket deal.

That is not for certain, depending on how much the "almost half" is and what Lionel's exact number is. Discounting 40-45% of 359,000 could still put her ahead of Lionel's "nearly 200k."

Madonna: Promo price $ 52.00-1,000 for her Album

Lady Gaga: Promo price $.99 [-X

Oh I've seen worse...

Back on the Billboard 200, Lady Antebellum's "Own the Night" zooms 16-4 (108,000; up 437%), Coldplay's "Mylo Xyloto" moves 29-5 (100,000; up 567%), Drake's "Take Care" is up 8-7 (58,000; up 97%) and Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter IV" jumps 37-8 (36,000; up 173%). All were promoted for 25 cents at one point in the week.

(None of those discounted titles are impacted by Billboard's new pricing policy, which took effect in November of last year. Only albums priced below $3.49 during their first four weeks of release will not be eligible for inclusion on the Billboard album charts and will not count towards sales data presented by Nielsen SoundScan.)

Am I the only person who doesn't really care about sales/numbers/charts/etc?

I just want the music to be good...

I don't care about numbers either, however I do remember Madonna stans on here dragging Gaga for that .99 deal last year. Now both albums will have that asterisk next to them.

Editor's Note: What Role Did Bundling and Exclusives Play in Madonna and Justin Bieber's Big Debuts?

By Bill Werde (@bwerde), New York

Madonna has the no. 1 album on this week's Billboard 200. She sold 359,000 copies of MDNA compared to Lionel Richie's Tuskegee, which opens with a really impressive 199k first week. But many of Madonna's sales came through a bundle option, in which fans who purchased tickets for her upcoming tour received a code that could be redeemed for either a physical CD or a digital download of the album.

Madonna's 'MDNA' Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200, Lionel Richie Bows at No. 2

Justin Bieber's new single "Boyfriend" debuts at no. 2 on the Hot 100. Fun.'s "We Are Young" continues its incredible run atop the greatest songs chart. No doubt, true Beliebers will be sad to note that "Boyfriend"'s Hot 100 score did not include meaningful points from plays on streaming services, including on-demand subscription companies a la Spotify, as Team Bieber decided to withhold the song from such services for much of its first charting week. The "Boyfriend" download was also exclusive to iTunes, restricting the buying option for those that do not frequent the Apple retail store.

Justin Bieber's 'Boyfriend' Debuts at No. 2 on Hot 100, Sells 521K Digitally

There are plenty of people crying foul on both fronts. Those people should probably calm down. Both examples offer a glimpse into the complicated, largely experimental and ever-changing world of marketing, distributing and monetizing new releases in today's marketplace.

Of Madonna's 359,000 sold, trusted sources tell Billboard that somewhere in the area of 185,000 came from the bundle/redemption code. Sacre bleu, you say, doing math: 359 - 180 = 179. Mr. Richie's 199,000 is the true king-making total this week!

But that's completely ridiculous. With all respect deserved and paid to the beloved songs of Mr. Richie, think about two important points. One: Madonna fans who redeemed that code are not receiving the album for free. The price of Madonna's album was bundled into the ticket purchase. I can understand why there's confusion about this. Even the CEO of Ticketmaster tweeted that fans buying tickets got "a free copy of MDNA." (The March 30 tweet has since been taken down). Such is the less-than-fully-transparent nature of bundling.

But let's take a hypothetical for a second: the cost of MDNA wasn't bundled into the ticket price, or that Billboard doesn't count those sales. All 185,000 fans who used the Madonna redemption code were the first in line to buy tickets to her tour. These are her top fans, each of whom were eager to shell out anywhere from $50 to more than $350 for a seat. If no bundle existed, do you really think a large portion of these fans wouldn't have purchased the album? We'll never know for certain, of course. But I think it's a more than safe bet that Madonna has the no. 1 album in the U.S. under any circumstance - joining her deserved no. 1 debuts in at least 17 other countries, according to manager Guy Oseary's tweets.

For context, here are her recent albums' first-week sales, per Nielsen SoundScan:

2008 - Hard Candy - 280K
2005 - Confessions on a Dance Floor - 350K
2003 - American Life - 240K
2000 - Music - 420K
1998 - Ray of Light - 371K

So you can see, given that MDNA has a nice buzz and single going, it's pretty much beyond reason to think that suddenly this album would sell substantially less than any recent one Madonna has released.

That said, let's wait and see what the drop-off is next week on sales of MDNA. Second weeks tend to follow a fairly predictable curve. And while it's far from a perfect science, it's one of the best bullsh-- detectors out there for an inflated first week. Billboard's head of charts Silvio Pietroluongo says that an iconic pop star's album will generally drop anywhere from 65 to 80 percent second week. If MDNA drops a lot more than that, it'll be an indication of the degree of first week inflation caused by bundling.

The Bieber issue is probably more complex. The Hot 100 chart is driven largely by radio play and digital sales, with lesser slices of streaming and on-demand music rolled in. Would Bieber have had a no. 1 had his team consented to streaming the song on services such as Rhapsody and Spotify?

Justin Bieber's 'Boyfriend' Breaks First-Week Airplay Record on Billboard Mainstream Top 40 Chart

One way of looking at this is to simply strip away streaming services from the entire Hot 100. In that scenario, yes, "Boyfriend" is the no. 1 song based on radio play and digital sales. But at this point in the evolution of the music fan experience, I'd just as soon strip away radio or digital sales as streaming songs. Spotify et al are a massive and important slice of the music consumption pie.

So then the next question would be, what would have happened if Team Bieber had streamed the song? That's impossible to know, of course. Would fans have streamed for free instead of buying the single? It's the question that every marketing and promotion and product-manager executive at every label turns around in their heads every day.

It's worth noting that key digital executives at most major labels- including Bieber's own Universal Music Group-now have gone on record as saying that Spotify doesn't cannibalize sales. So really, if that's the case, then why wasn't Bieber's "Boyfriend" streaming? I suppose the notion that Spotify doesn't cannibalize sales is not mutually exclusive to the notion that it might cannibalize sales in the short, immediate term. I can't think of another reason why the song wouldn't be streaming on Spotify.

Unless, of course, iTunes "incentivized" Team Bieber and/or UMG to make sure that the song was only available digitally on iTunes.

But of course, that would probably never happen.
Of course. ;)

Agreed. Bedtime Stories PEAKED at #3 but I'd be thrilled to have another album with four awesome singles and videos like it had!

Actually, the 90's are still my favorite decade for Madonna: I'm Breathless, Erotica, Bedtime Stories, Ray of Light back to back to back. She never hit #1 on the album chart once during the entire decade but I still prefer that string of albums to the other decades that were all #1's (except for her debut).

Why Madonna still leads, others follow

I thought she was over. Madonna, that is.

I thought she was too old to be referring to herself as a "girl." I thought pop music passed her by. I thought Lady Gaga had killed her.

And then I look at this week's Billboard chart and I see I thought wrong.

Her 12th CD, "MDNA" debuted No. 1 on the album chart and she has two singles on the dance-chart Top 10. She's 53 and the clubs are banging her new stuff, including "Give Me All Your Luvin," which became her 38th top 10 hit on the pop chart. For those of you keeping score, that's more than Elvis, more than The Beatles. I'm not saying she's better, but clearly she's done -- correction -- doing more.

This year she won another Golden Globe and her halftime performance at the Super Bowl drew more viewers than the game itself, according to Nielsen. I know the perception is that only gay men care about Madonna, but if that were true, given the 114 million viewers who tuned in to watch her at halftime, maybe "don't ask, don't tell" should have been called "just assume."

The reality is it's hard for pop music to leave behind someone who keeps leading the pack. Madonna had the highest grossing tour ever for a solo artist (2008) and has sold more than 300 million records worldwide. She's an '80s child whose 2005 single "Hung Up" holds the Guinness Book record for topping the charts in 41 countries, while 2012's MDNA was No. 1 on iTunes in 40 countries.
That's not "over," that's now.

When you look at where Madonna's career is today in the same week we learned Whitney Houston drowned in a foot of water, you're reminded that God truly does work in mysterious ways. The two pop icons released debut albums within two years of each other, Madonna in 1983 and Houston in 1985.

Of course, Houston was the former model with a voice for the ages, while Madonna was the thin-voiced tart rolling around on the floor of the MTV music awards in a wedding dress proclaiming that she felt like a virgin. If anyone might have been expected to meet a desperate, tragic end, back then the safe money would have been on Madonna. And yet Houston's gone, Michael Jackson's gone, Prince is semi-retired and everyone else, with the exception of U2, is making their money off nostalgia
Meanwhile, Madonna has methodically become, arguably, the greatest recording artist of all time. Who would've thunk it?

As for the music, her latest CD is not breaking any new ground, but it does remind everyone who owns the ground Gaga, Rihanna, Beyonce and others are walking on. In fact, each time they receive a royalty check, they should be sending Madonna a cut.

While MDNA is about three songs too long for my taste, I will tell you the first five songs make it very difficult not to want to dance, and that the track "Gang Bang" is pure genius. As you could probably figure out from the title, it's not radio friendly, but likely not because of what you may think. And that, in a nutshell, is why Madonna is who she is.

You can tell you're watching a Woody Allen film with the first five minutes of dialogue. You can identify the beautiful prose of Toni Morrison within a couple of pages. But my 15-year-old came home one day and asked who I was listening to. I told him Madonna and my son, who loves techno and hip hop, thought I was joking.

"Seriously... like your Madonna?" he asked.

"Yep," I said.

"Well, she's still old but that song's not."

The song was "Gang Bang" and I'm glad he left the room before she started singing. As I said, it's not radio friendly. But then again, it wouldn't be Madonna if a song like that was.

If you're an M stan I'm sure you're excited to see her Live. I'm not a stan and I'd climb the highest bluff to have a chance to see her Live. We all know that M is the Queen of Touring right now, so of course her stans rushed to get tickets before they sold out, which were very expensive, so of course they'd opt to receive the album. Thousands of tickets were sold, and those thousands clearly opted to receive the album.
Truth is, sans the ticket deal (even with record breaking SuperBowl exposure and great reviews) 'MDNA' probably sold less than 180K its first week.
The billboard article makes no sense. Madonna stans that bought the first batch of tickets most likely already preordered the album and found the free album deal a cheap way to increase Madonnas sales, so why turn it down?

So in theory, they already had the album and were just getting a free copy to help Madonnas sales.
On the other hand, one could argue that there's no way of knowing that of the 185,000 sales from the bundle, fans weren't doubling up their copies. As they pointed out, these are the hardcore Madonna fans. That's what stans do.

Both albums ('Born This Way' and 'MDNA') will have an asterisk next to there debut weeks. Interscope needs to quit it with these shady promo deals.
