Diana was performing in 1959 ....Madonna was born in 1958....she was a gay icon from the beginning because she didn't pay attention to the rules and broke all of them...something gay men could relate to. I have heard people say that a mainstream artist never embraced gay people before Madonna but Diana Ross and the Supremes rivaled The Beatles throughout the 1960s and as a solo artist she ruled the 70s and 80s. Billboard named her the Entertainer of the Century and Guinness listed her as the most successful female artist in history in 1993...how much more mainstream can anyone get?

It has been said that the coming out process involves the compulsory "Madonna phrase".
Nowadays all pop icons are gay icons.
But for quite sometime it was only Madonna.
Do you think all gay men have a appreciation for Madonna and could at least recognize the impact she has in gay culture.
No, I'm not fan-girling. But one must recognize Madonna's prominent place at the top of the pyramid she has on the gay culture and society. And no, not the top of the Illuminati pyramid. That is reserved for Beyonce and Rihanna and their demonic ways.

The answer would be true if we were dealing with the stereo type cliche hetro thinking, or the smaller sub genera of gay people who flutter around this shit like monarch butterflies to a warm pine tree in Jan on the west coast of Mexico.

Part of the Madonna phenomenon -I think- is the relative dearth of other famous female singers with homo-appeal of her generation. Think of Craig Russell the female impersonator.
Now think of him doing the same show with only the female stars from '85 - '95. That leaves what, Madonna, Tiffany and Cindy Lauper?
At the moment I don't think there even is a real homo-star alternative to Madonna at the moment.

Madonna is a very smart and successful woman. Yes, she has done great things for LGBTQ rights, but she's extremely overrated as a gay icon and entertainer. Not every gay man listens to her music or cares to see her live. She's not relevant to this generation in pop culture right now. She can still sell out stadiums with her extravagant and over the top shows, but Madonna continues to equate herself with younger artists by used shock and controversy to get attention.
