The Official "Shelter" Movie Thread! [merged]

Finally saw this - and fell in love with it. What a touching, unpretentious little movie and a much needed corrective to most of the banal and overwrought schlock that passes for Queer Cinema these days. Shelter is not blindingly original, but it's well-acted, nuanced (I was relieved they didn't turn the sister into an out-and-out monster), and scaled to perfection.

And how amazingly sexy was the way Brad Rowe looks into Zach's eyes before kissing him that first time??? Whew!! Rowe is still a major hottie and his laid-back style was just perfect here.

I watched on youtube a week or so ago, I really enjoyed it. The movie was sweet and I liked that more then just the gay shit was going on. Other then enjoying it I do not have a lot to say. I wish there were less gay films about comming to terms with it but this film was a really good take.

Great movie!! ..|..|

BTW...I don't think Shaun outed Zach to Gabe. I think Gabe was on to them when he returned unexpectedly...he knew something was up...plus, I'm sure he saw Zach's car in the driveway. Think about what happened in the next scene...when he made a comment about his board being at the house. Zach tried to play it off but Gabe was like "Whatever dude".
I agree.
Also, wasn't Zach wearing Shaun's shirt in the restaurant scene following Gabe's surprise return? I think Gabe figured it out when he saw Zach wearing his brother's shirt. I think he was trying to let Zach know then that he knew about him and Shaun when he said "cool shirt"...

Rented this last night on Netflix and it has become my favorite gay movie!
SOOOO nice to see two gay men who are just regular guys without the fem mannerisms!
It reminded me of my husband and I....... minus the surfing!:D
The chemistry was really intense between Rowe/Wright which made it believeable!
I normally think movies shouldn't have a sequel but would love to see what became of Zach & Shaun.
Did Jeanne come back later and want Cody?
How did Gabe interact with his best friend & brother as a couple and did he get with Tori (Zach's ex)?
Also the friendship between Zach & Tori was refreshing.

Such a rare gem in the "gay" cinema world!!! LOVED IT!!!:=D::=D:

I finally bought Shelter the other day and I thought that it was just okay.

What a touching, unpretentious little movie
That sums it up perfectly.

Someone mentioned earlier about how stereotypical the plots of gay films tend to be with the overly tragic (Angels in America etc), the overly campy (Birdcage) to the overly disbelieving (Broken Hearts Club). Latter Days was one film I was impressed with and I am equally so with this film.

I can relate a bit to Zach because my sister is similar to Jeanie (not quite as neglectful but close) and I spend most weekends raising my 6 year old nephew.

But Jeanie's not completely bad. It's clear that she loves her son and wants the best for him. I get the feeling that she removed herself from Cody because she felt like a bad influence on him. She knew Zach could offer a much better upbringing for her son if she wasn't around to drag him back down. That's my take on it.

But as far as Zach goes you can't help but feel for the guy. He's got all these dreams and aspirations that he has to keep giving up on for his family... even a chance at true happiness. Thankfully he found a compromise in the end and I must admit I've been watching the ending over and over. It's such a blissful scene.

I have one question though... what happened to the dad when everyone left?

I'm so glad that people are still discovering this amazing movie. I hope it continues to inspire and entertain people for years to come.

I recently read a comment about Shelter and felt a bit nostalgic. It seems so long ago but it's nice to hear that people are still discovering this great movie. If you haven't seen it, Check it out!

Wow...why haven't I watched this movie before. I have seen the other crappy gay movies. This one was great. Watched it last night before going to bed, and actually had a dream about it. I would rank this as number one on the gay cinema.

liked edge of seventeen better, even with its weird dialogue and situations at times - the discovery was more interesting than family squabbles in shelter. trevor wright was good, and the sister is also the girlfriend in edge of seventeen. shelter is fiction and its hard to write gay fiction it seems with all the romantic comedies portraying a hetero centric world.

if i were to write a gay film it would be about a dropout with divorced parents who becomes addicted to drugs from his father beating him, his mom dies and he gets his life in order, meets some gay friends. but by the time he finds out who he is, its too late, and he commits suicide. my own autobiography with some fiction mixed in. i think it would make a compelling story.

I have to agree: This is one of the best gay themed movies of all time!!

I actually wrote a review for this film on my website: Shelter (2007) | GayFilmMagazine.com
Maybe you'd like to check it out. You will also find more ratings and reviews of other gay themed films plus interviews with actors and directors (not of SHELTER though - unfortunately). Any suggestions for the site are appreciated... and if you like it, please bookmark it and visit again :-)

I haven't watched this movie in quite some time, a shame there aren't more like it
