Whitney Houston Sparkles in Big-Screen Comeback

November 16, 2011 | Movies

Singer Whitney Houston is making a triumphant return to the big screen!

Houston sat down with "Extra's" AJ Calloway, and revealed, "I've matured in so many ways. I'm good where I am at this moment."

Whitney is set to star in "Sparkle," about three sisters who are in a successful young singing group. She last starred in "Preacher's Wife" fifteen years ago, and expressed excitement for playing the role of the sisters' mom, Emma. "I'm comfortable now... my daughter is my greatest inspiration. She has trained me for this role."

"Sparkle," which includes cast members Cee-Lo Green and Derek Luke, was originally set for production a decade ago, with R&B singer Aaliyah attached as its star. After Aaliyah's tragic death, the project was shelved.

"American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks was chosen to fill the lead. Whitney exclaimed, "Jordin was perfect!"

The incomparable icon, Whitney Houston is back once again promoting her upcoming movie Sparkle. This time she sat down with AJ Calloway from Extra TV and discussed returning to the big screen, the R. I must say it's SO good to see Whitney coming back to her old self! I love this unedited interview. Whitney's old personality shines through and her voice has cleared up/improved so much. She has that 'spark' back and she's all enthusiastic/joyful and you can just tell she is really in a much better place now. This side of her was missing during the ILTY era in 2009 and on tour, where you can tell her heart and soul wasn't truly in it and she was just doing it to fulfill a commitment from Clive. And she looks absolutely GORGEOUS now. Welcome back to your old self, Whitney! :=D:

:luv:

....but poor Derek Luke didn't even get interviewed the whole time sitting next to her. He was probably thinking "what am I doing here if they not gonna talk to ME..." Lmao!

Whitney Houston Shines In EXTRA Interview

whitneyonextra.jpg

Fans are seeing a new Whitney Houston – sparkling in her own right as she preps a reboot of the 1976 musical ‘Sparkle’. Already gracing Entertainment Tonight and Access Hollywood, the ever youthful 48-year-old diva has now taken her new shine over to AJ Calloway (formerly of 106 & Park) and Extra TV.

Joined by ‘Sparkle’ co-star Derek Luke, see ‘The Voice’ on her latest promo stop for the highly anticipated film (due 2012) after the jump:

Good to see the ‘I Look To You’ songstress looking better and better with each round. Though the film isn’t due for months, just the fact that it has been (to great degree) in the works for over a decade is enough reason to start the promo early. For, just being able to see a renewed Whitney is enough for most of us (myself included) to tune in.

Your thoughts?

Julie Hinds: Whitney Houston enjoying family feel on Detroit set of 'Sparkle'

Besides acting in "Sparkle," Whitney Houston is also an executive producer.

The Whitney Houston who came to Detroit last month to begin filming "Sparkle" is a different actress from the one who debuted on the big screen in 1992's "The Bodyguard."

How? "Well, I'm older now and more mature," said the singing legend via e-mail to the Free Press.

"Sparkle," which was scheduled to wrap filming Thursday, marks a return to movies for Houston, whose public and personal ups and downs have long been the subject of media attention.

It's been more than a decade since she starred in a feature film. In the 1990s, her appearances in hits like "Waiting to Exhale" made her the rare singing icon who segues successfully into acting.

Houston recalls those projects now with fondness.

"I was really scared to do 'The Bodyguard' and put Kevin Costner off for 2 years out of fear! 'Waiting to Exhale' was fun because it was an ensemble cast of great actors, and 'The Preacher's Wife' -- well, starring alongside Denzel Washington with Penny Marshall directing and getting to sing all those gospel songs made it a pleasure."

Houston has been busy rehearsing and filming during her stay here, but she thanked the Motor City for its hospitality. "Detroit has been a great temporary home," she messaged. "Everyone has been really kind and I have some family and friends here and the cast is now like family."

"Sparkle," a remake of the 1976 movie, began shooting in October. It has filmed at locations like Music Hall, Detroit Opera House, Masonic Temple, Fillmore Detroit and Cliff Bell's jazz club.

The movie was approved for a film incentive of $3.1 million on about $7.4 million of estimated in-state spending.

"Sparkle," which is set to be released in 2012, has a cast that includes "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks, Derek Luke of "Antwone Fisher," Mike Epps, Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter and Omari Hardwick. Pop-soul star (and NBC's "The Voice" coach) Cee Lo Green and Detroit singer Kem also have roles.

In the new version, Sparks has the title role -- played by Irene Cara in the original -- of a musical prodigy who forms a singing group with her two sisters.

Unlike the earlier movie, which was set in gritty 1950s New York, this one places Sparkle in an affluent neighborhood of 1960s Detroit during the height of Motown.

Houston portrays Sparkle's mother, Emma. The role was played by veteran character actress Mary Alice in the original, in which the character was named Effie.

Besides acting in the movie, Houston is an executive producer who's serious about the responsibility of updating a film that continues to have a special place in the hearts of many fans for giving African-American actresses of that era a chance to play glamorous, complicated leading roles.

"The biggest challenge for us as the production and for me, is to do justice to the story and for me to play my role to the best of my ability," said Houston.

In a recent interview, Houston told "Access Hollywood" that the project, which she's been involved with for more than a decade, was set at one point to star Aaliyah, who grew up in Detroit. It was put on hold after the 22-year-old singer-actress died in a plane crash in 2001.

Whit looks FAB. She's gonna really shine in this movie. :D

Whitney Houston's 'Sparkle' wraps in downtown Detroit

Published: Friday, November 18, 2011, 9:17 AM Updated: Friday, November 18, 2011, 9:19 AM

The waiting begins. The Detroit Free Press reports that the remake of 1976's "Sparkle" wrapped filming last night in downtown Detroit. The Grand Circus Park district had been ongoing nightly transformations into a Motown-era neighborhood for filming of the movie, which stars Whitney Houston and Jordin Sparks (Local R&B singer KEM also plays a role). Moviegoers will be able to catch glimpses of the Fox Theatre, Cliff Bell's, Detroit Opera House and Masonic Temple when Sparkle premieres.

Nov. 18, Detroit Free Press: Houston has been busy rehearsing and filming during her stay here, but she thanked the Motor City for its hospitality. "Detroit has been a great temporary home," she messaged. "Everyone has been really kind and I have some family and friends here and the cast is now like family."

When "Sparkle" arrives to big screens in 2012, one Detroit connection will be missing from the film. In an interview that aired this week with Access Hollywood, Houston (who also serves as an executive producer for the film) revealed that the R&B singer Aaliyah was her original choice to play the title role. The shades-sporting Detroit native died at just 22 in a plane crash.

Nov. 15, Pop Crush: "When we brought it to her, she was so enthusiastic about it and she wanted to do it so badly," Houston says. "She was our Sparkle. Unfortunately, it just didn’t go that way."

Houston says she shelved the project, adding, "I put it down. I said, 'My Sparkle has gone to a better place,' and we just left it alone."

Whitney Houston was TRENDING on twitter last night...all because a 10 sec clip of her was aired on the Anerican Music Awards last night. They saved the best (her) for last!!

I think Whitney's clip contribution was the best of the Divas set. And that comes from a hardcore dedicated Madonna fan. Whitney's voice was just exceptional in that clip. I hope that she can get back to that level... despite the unlikliness.

Yep...and OF COURSE they saved the best for last. The best, and with the most AMA wins for a female. Go Whit! :gogirl:

Whitney Houston Recalls Meeting Elvis Presley

11/19/2011 2:50 PM ET

whitneyhouston-092809.jpg

(RTTNews) - Whitney Houston has opened up about meeting Elvis Presley as a child, and she says it was a moment she will never forget.

While speaking with Access Hollywood, the Bodyguard star says she was tongue-tied when meeting the King of Rock as a young girl.

During the interview, Houston says she met the legend backstage at one of his shows, where he was still clad in a velour outfit and sunglasses.

"It was one of those moments that I won't forget as a kid," she explained. "It wasn't like, 'Hi Mr. Elvis, nice to meet you,' we didn't do that. We just sat back and looked at him. Amazing to look at."

In addition to her childhood experience with Elvis, Whitney also recently opened up about her forthcoming film Sparkle. According to the singer and actress, work on the new film was a "humbling experience" and more difficult than her previous on-screen appearances.

Whitney Houston Calls Detroit a Great "Temporary Home"

M_WhitneyHouston630_111411.jpg

Whitney Houston was set to wrap shooting for the upcoming remake of 1976 film Sparkle on Thursday, reports the Detroit Free Press. The original movie was set in Harlem, but the one Whitney's working on has been re-imagined in an affluent section of D-town. It's a city that Whitney has been enjoying, she tells the newspaper. "Detroit has been a great temporary home," she says in an e-mail. "Everyone has been really kind and I have some family and friends here and the cast is now like family."

The tight-knit crew, which includes pop singer Jordin Sparks, was spotted last month taking in a Detroit Lions football game. More than a decade has passed since Whitney graced silver screens in a feature film. Looking back on her past roles, Whitney writes, "I was really scared to do The Bodyguard and put Kevin Costner off for 2 years out of fear! Waiting to Exhale was fun because it was an ensemble cast of great actors, and The Preacher's Wife -- well, starring alongside Denzel Washington with Penny Marshall directing and getting to sing all those gospel songs made it a pleasure."

With the possibility of a Waiting to Exhale film sequel in the air, Whitney recently told Access Hollywood she would not say no to joining the cast. For now though, fans can look forward to seeing Whitney in her role as the mother of Sparkle's title character. The film will be released next year.

I swear I loves me some Whitneyyyyyy!

...they'll never be another like her. Never be another to reach her level.

The reaction she gets as she walks out in this video below sums up Whitney's placement among female artists in the industry. She's at the very top. The head diva. Untouchable. Icon. She's been through all her drama and still no one else in the industry can get a reaction like this...and she gets them ALL the time! People in the industry KNOW who the greatest is..

Sony dates a trio of pics

'Evil Dead,' 'Captain Phillips' and 'Sparkle' get playdates

By JEFF SNEIDER

Sony Pictures has announced release dates for a diverse trio of films.
Studio skedded its "Evil Dead" reboot for April 12, 2013. Fede Alvarez is directing from a script he co-wrote with Rodo Sayagues, while "Young Adult" scribe Diablo Cody did revisions.

Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert's Ghost House Pictures is producing the horror pic, which falls under its recently announced pact with Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions and FilmDistrict. Project will begin casting in the coming weeks, and so far is the only film on that date.

Earlier in the week, Sony announced it would release Paul Greengrass' Tom Hanks-starrer "Captain Phillips" on March 22, 2013. "The Social Network" team of Scott Rudin, Michael De Luca, Dana Brunetti and Kevin Spacey are producing the Billy Ray-scripted film, which finds Hanks playing Captain Richard Phillips, who gave himself up as a hostage to Somali pirates in order to keep the crew of his cargo ship safe.

"Captain Phillips" will target the adult audience, going up against DreamWorks Animation's "The Croods," which features the voices of Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone and Nicolas Cage, which will chase after younger auds.

Sony will also release its music-themed drama "Sparkle" on Aug. 10, 2012. Pic, which stars Jordin Sparks, Derek Luke and Whitney Houston, will feature original music from R. Kelly.

"Sparkle" will square off against Summit's zombie pic "Warm Bodies" and Warner Bros.' "Rivals," a political comedy from director Jay Roach that pairs Will Ferrell with Zach Galifianakis.
