Re: The 2012 BET Awards: Whitney Houston Tribute is Top Secret.

Finally got a chance to watch this over the weekend at a friend's. Glad DVR exists. Can't imagine sitting through almost 4 hrs of this mess. You know this was going to be bad when they let two stupid hoes sit in the front row (nicki & kim).

Samuel L. Jackson is one the most respected actors we have. Why would someone of his stature agree to host this? He really embarrassed himself with his "satorial" choices. I cringed every time he opened his mouth. He was trying to be down but he just looked and sounded a fool.

Then we had the "musical performances". Mostly overrated and overhyped rappers spewing so much filth several portions of the show were completely censored.

We've lost many influential people just in the first half of 2012. I still had hope the BET Awards would redeem themselves with special tributes. Once again they failed miserably.
Don Cornelius was one of the most influential men in music, heck BET wouldn't existed if it wasn't for him. And what did he get??? This man deserves an entire show dedicated to his memory.

Nick Ashford (along with his wife/partner Valerie Simpson) are one of the most talented and prolific songwriting duos ever. And what did he get, less than two minutes of Valerie paying tribute. FAIL again.

Donna Summer is one of the most underrated singers ever. She opened doors for so many female singers in that room including Whitney Houston. And what did she get as a tribute. Another two minute tribute by yet another barely competent singer (Chante Moore). She ruined "Love to Love You Baby" trying to hit that whistle note (which has no place in that song) and a subpar version of "Bad Girls". A video montage of her many Top 40 hits would have been more appropriate and effective in reminding people that SHE was the original VOICE.

No wonder the ratings were down this year.

Re: The 2012 BET Awards: Whitney Houston Tribute is Top Secret.

Since the OP wanted to make this about the "secret" Whitney Houston tribute, let me address that. I think if the performers who participated in the tribute would have been announced before hand, the ratings would have been lower even.

R. Kelly had to postpone the promotion of his latest album due to vocal issues. This was only a couple of days before the BET Awards so I don't know how you expected him to be there??? Ignorance is bliss I guess.

Like dat black dick stated, it's laughable who you consider "new blood".

Just because YOU didn't hear new music released in 2011-2012 doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Maybe you need to step out of your comfort zone. Stop watching BET, stopping watching that Braxton reality shit, no more DIVAS, no more Housewives. Even though you may be physically stuck living in the middle of nowhere you have an internet connection. Explore, open your eyes and ears.

As far as the Whitney Houston tribute was concerned, all I saw was a room full of hypocrites and a devastated woman. Every single person in that room knew Whitney was a drug addicted for many years and saw the consequences of that in her deteriorated voice. Most did nothing about it. They just stood on the sidelines, many indulging themselves. Some have said there wasn't a dry eye in the room. Of course not, guilt, the thought that it could have been them or in Soulja Boy's case the recent passing of a family member would make anyone cry. Crocodile tears they were.

After all the venom Whitney Houston fan(atic)s have spewed about Mariah Carey over the years it was interesting to see them begging to have her participate in this tribute. She was the ONLY A-List superstar that showed up.

Monica is beautiful and did a credible version of "I Love The Lord".

Brandy may be sweet and pretty but a bit overrated as a singer. I'm with those that think she lipped parts of her performance.

Gary Houston gets a pass because it's her brother and sang something only certain fans would know.

My heart went out to Cissy Houston. You could see the pain of loosing someone to drugs on her face. The fact that she had to deal with that for so many years is heartbreaking.
What a beautiful song she chose. This is the ONLY time off-key singing like this acceptable. I guess emotion trumps technical virtuosity any day.

The ladies from WTE were a nice touch. Angela is pure class. Hope this wasn't more than a Public Relations move since the sequel is in limbo.

Even though the segue way into Chaka Kahn was jarring she looked and sounded great. She seemed to be reclaiming "I'm Every Woman" as her own.

Overall all it ended abruptly and went on way too long. The time should have been shared more evenly with Nick and Donna.

Let's face it, this tribute wouldn't have happened if she hadn't passed. Her journey to irrelevance was way on its way. To go at this time was probably a blessing for her, her family and fans. Not to mention her legacy. She has sold more in the past six months than this century combined. Death and sympathy sell. Its still too early to tell if she will be remembered as a singer or drug addict.

"Sparkle"(Official Trailer): Whitney Houston's final film opens 08/17/12..

Whitney Houston plays Emma in Sparkle…At one point, she utters a chilling line: “Was my life not enough of a cautionary tale for you?”

How I miss Whitney Houston...I've seen all of Whitney's films on opening day going all the way back to "The Bodyguard". I will continue the Tradition this Friday when "Sparkle" hits theatres nationwide. I am so glad I witnessed the Spirit & Vocal Phenomenon that made her America's unforgettable Treasure.

I'll be playing my Whitney CD's driving to the theatre and leaving. Gone way too soon but I'm glad she's able to rest. Nippy's Life & Musical Legacy is one for the Books...

Re: "Sparkle"(Official Trailer): Whitney Houston's final film opens 08/17/12..

I've been a fan of Whitney ever since I first heard/saw her - "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)". The past 5-10 years were so sad, seeing an amazing talent slowly fade away and hearing that powerful voice become almost a whisper.

Re: "Sparkle"(Official Trailer): Whitney Houston's final film opens 08/17/12..

a chill just ran down my spine...I'm stunned...no, I'm not crying, I just have something in my eye...

I gotta get a ticket for this!

Re: "Sparkle"(Official Trailer): Whitney Houston's final film opens 08/17/12..

The entire Cast of Sparkle really shines...The last time I saw the original 1976 Sparkle was years ago..I give the Director credit for re-telling this story his way. The plot was the same but it wasnt as Dark as the original and he featured very talented up-and-coming Actors....I think everybody in the theatre was eager for Whitney to appear..... Whitney delivered and was very believable as the strict Mother of 3 talented daughters. I think the Director should have allowed Whitney to improvise/adlib through some of her scenes which would have added more emotional dialogue that she was capable of delivering......I was impressed with American Idol winner Jordan Spark's acting. Jordan has a beautiful voice and she's drop-dead-gorgeous. She came across as a natural and Sparkle should get her more work.

Now in my opinion the stand-out performance came from the Beautiful Carmen Ejogo who plays the Oldest sibling known as "Sista"...Carmen gave an Oscar caliber performance in all of her scenes..She's a scene-stealer in the best way....The Academy should recognize her performance.......The music was outstanding and should be released to radio..I remember reading a while back that R. Kelly was signed on to write the entire soundtrack and he delivered. Kelly should get an Oscar nomination for Best Song and more than one of the songs should be nominated...

Of course you can't have a Movie featuring Whitney and not have her sing in it...There was a church scene where she sang the Inspirational classic "His Eye is on the Sparrow"....We all know Whitney's beautiful singing voice was all-but-gone during these last years of her life but her emotion could be felt through the Screen into the live viewing audience...

The main competition for Sparkle this weekend is "The Expendables"(which I plan to see next week)......I hope Sparkle has a good opening weekend.....The Houston Family, Whitney's Friends and loyal Fans should be very proud of this final project..She did good...

I know....Her vocal coach told a reporter that the constant use of Drugs damaged her voice so bad that she almost lost her speaking voice...

You should go see it...And you and Wilbur need to stop doing the disappearing act...:p...

Re: "Sparkle"(Official Trailer): Whitney Houston's final film opens 08/17/12..

Let's face it, without Whitney's drug-fueled death, this movie would have gone straight to video. Morbid curiosity allowed this movie to be released in theaters.

This project was doomed from the beginning. A remake of a semi-obscure( to most people) movie that wasn't very good to begin with. A relatively bunch of unknown actors (to most people) "led" by a has been (to most people). There were red flags from the get go.*

The soundtrack sounded promising considering R. Kelly was involved. That soon proved very disappointing. The first song, "Celebrate", billed as Whitney Houston and Jordin Sparks is so generic. Jordin sounds lackluster while Whitney struggles in the background. The song barely reached 185 on *iTunes Top Single sales. *And that was only for a few hours on release date. It never even charted on the Billboard HOT 100.

Due to the failure of "Celebrate", they desperately released Whitney's cover of "His Eye Is On the Sparrow" as the next single a week later. This proved to be more heartbreaking than anything. Sales wise this proved to be a bigger failure not even charting on iTunes or Billboard TOP 100. The sound of Whitney's drug-ravaged gravely voice is beyond words.*

The soundtrack came in at #26 on the Billboard Top 200 struggling to sell 12,000 copies. The second week it tumbled to #42. Last weeks position will be released later this week.

Another sign this project was in trouble was when producers announced there would be no advance screenings for critics. This is usually a sign they and the studio don't have any faith in the project. They want to get as much advance sales before the bad reviews come out.*

The official box office numbers were released today and they can't be considered anything but disappointing. The film consistently drew less of an audience as the weekend progressed. Those church groups and families that were heavily marketed to failed to materialize on Sunday.

Official weekend numbers (actuals) for Sparkle:

Aug 17, 2012 - $4,521,165
Aug 18, 2012 - $4,302,044
Aug 19, 2012 -*$2,820,133

Weekend Total - $11,662,463

Gee, I wonder why CHURCH-GOERS wouldn't go to a cinema on a SUNDAY? Could they possibly have something very important on?

And what's with all the meaningless asterisks - did you just copy and paste someone else's entire review?

And another thing: FUCK iTunes shmiTunes and boxoffice shmoxoffice.....my liking of a CD/movie isn't determined by chart placings.

(Same goes for TV shows and ratings - I love Cougar Town for fuck's sake!)

Re: Cissy Houston asked about Whitney's sexuality on Oprah

I was shocked that she was using drugs in the late 80's during the peak of her career.

Re: Cissy Houston asked about Whitney's sexuality on Oprah

Yeah, I don't get the hateful vibes from her...don't think she wouldn't have accepted Whitney, she just wouldn't have 'approved'.

Religion is very poisonous, I'm afraid.

Re: Cissy Houston asked about Whitney's sexuality on Oprah

Cissy wasn't giving a PHUK in that interview. God I love her. SO shady.

Re: Cissy Houston asked about Whitney's sexuality on Oprah

I do believe in music history it was black and white Gay folk who were the main people who loved Cissy's music and bought her albums--typical.

Re: Cissy Houston asked about Whitney's sexuality on Oprah

The world may never know another Whitney. It's sad that same can't control themselves with money and fame.

Re: Cissy Houston asked about Whitney's sexuality on Oprah

So all this time I was thinking Bobby introduced her to drugs. It was actually her brother. Now that is fucked up. He caused his sisters addiction and eventual death. He has to live with that.

My Lord.....I am watching the Service and it's so Beautiful and wonderful going home service.....

I am truly at a loss for words....This woman was my FIRST Celebrity crush when I was just 8yrs old...Whitney's Beauty and that Voice cast a Spell on the World......Like others have said it seems so unreal that she is gone. SexyKev is one of Whitney's BIGGEST Fans online and I can't even imagine what he's feeling right now. I Love you Kevin and one of the best things about Whitney's walk on this Earth is having touched so many and the Joy her Music brought into our Lives and especially the dedicated fans..

I was out of town last weekend when the News broke. I was driving back from picking up food and NPR reported the news. I had to rush in the room and ask my friends had they heard...I just knew it was a mistake or something...

My Prayers go out to the Houston Family, Dionne and Whitney's band...They knew her best and Loved her the most....

Rest in Peace you Great Queen of Pop...

I just watched Oprah's interview on OWN...I am amazed The Houston family was able to get through it. The shock of Whitney's death is still with them...It's interesting how Whitney prepared Bobbi Kris for so many things...I didnt know that Bobbi Kris lived with her Uncle & Aunt for 2yrs....That is FAMILY....So she's gonna be alright....Whitney could've left this world a long time ago but it happened when her daughter was 18 and developing into a young woman...They were closer than ever and Bobbi Kris has a strong foundation...

As far Whitney's death.....Man oh man oh man...Talk about a CLOUD lingering....Bobbi Kris was down the hall in the other suite with the photo shoot crew, Pat & Garry was in another suite getting things together...Whitney's driver was somewhere...Whitney's assistant was somewhere...But Whitney was all alone in that room...What in the world happened in that room?

Then Pat told Oprah she didn't know how Whitney got to the tub-naked...Then she was found facing down in the tub of water....

Hopefully the toxicology report will be released by the end of this month...We gotta know what was in her system that could have caused her death or perhaps her death was by natural causes....

We won't be able to stop thinking about Whitney until we know what happened to her...

There's no need to wait for the toxicology report. There is no need to know what was the cause of death in the end.

It was 25+ years of drug abuse (legal & prescribed), alcohol and cigarettes that killed her.

I am a sucker for "I Will Always Love You". I favor "So Emotional", "All The Man That I Need", "I Have Nothing" and "Run To You" a great deal too.
