Alopecia is not a disease. It is a condition. And it isn't a small, linear patch of missing hair which looks more like a scar. Alopecia causes large, irregular clumps of hair to fall out. Disease can cause it, but so can stress. It is not a disease.
Well, there's alopecia areata (patchy) and alopecia universalis (complete). I don't like to diagnose over the internet but I will say that the Smiths have said she was alopecia areata and every patient I have ever seen with this condition had circular or oval patches of hair loss. The only time I have seen hair loss in a straight line was a scar on the scalp- either from a cut or from a surgical incision.
...We need a poll attached to this thread on if the slap was fake or not. I think it looked fake.
It looked fake and that's why the audience thought it was a comedy bit.
There's video and photos from the side (not the broadcast footage) where it's clear that Rock was slapped. The sound of the slap is audible.
...Even Smith wouldn't trash his career for this.
If you want an eye-opening experience, tune into a gossip show for a few minutes (e.g. Inside Edition, TMZ, et al). It's like a stakeout. The press is camped at Chez Smith and in Boston outside of Chris Rock's hotel (where he's doing a show tonight). The Boston venue has added more shows because of demand for tickets and people are reselling tickets for tonight's show for hundreds of dollars over the original sale price.
The Smiths called the police today because the media is flying drones over their $42 million house in Calabasas.
This is their house, by the way (one of three homes they own):
...At any rate....what a shame that the last time we will see minelli on stage was upstaged by this.
Actors and production staff spend decades trying to get an award. These awards drive rentals and movie ticket purchases that make people a lot of money. The Smiths are persona non grata for creating a distraction.
Every comic hates Will Smith because now they have to worry about some idiot walking up on the stage and hitting them over a joke they didn't like.
There's also a whole lotta stylists and designers who count on the publicity for the good (and awful) fashion publicized from the red carpet. They're pissed because we stopped talking about the dresses and are now talking about the Smiths.
There's also a lot of dithering about the race issue- that the Oscars have been criticized for not recognizing minorities in the nominations or the awards. This year, where the production staff was largely black, there were black hosts and there were multiple black, latino and LGBT nominees turned into an embarrassment. The amount of damage that was done extends far beyond the damage to the questionable careers of Will and Jada Smith.
Goldberg is on the Board of Governors of the Academy.
